Now that GT has Wood: What defensive recruits are at his "bullseye"?

I am just curious as to which recruits are the #1-#2 punch on his targeted list given his scheme?
Do we anticipate any lingering offers out there now for recruits who didn't sign in the early period to be pulled and given to "new" targets who have decided GT is where they want to be? Or are we basically done on the defensive side for recruiting 2018 and we'll begin adjusting our sights for defensive recruiting for 2019?

I wrote about it in another thread, but Roof's recent recruiting classes and the guys we have on roster now are going to give CNW a LOT to work with. It's a similar situation to what CPJ walked into with the offensive pieces that were on the roster in 2008. The guys we've signed with length, speed, skillset, and athleticism...especially at LB, S, and CB are almost perfect for CNW's scheme. No, not everything is exactly what CNW needs (DL will need to be worked out, much like the OL for CPJ in 2008), but CNW has the pieces to improve our defense.

Not sure App was recruiting the same sort of kids we normally recruit. It would be unusual for 3 and 4 * kids to be interested in App since they had to recruit against Wake, NCSU,UNC and ECU just in NC alone. They do a good job coaching what they get.

I am really glad the change was made to get ( a) Woody ! Seriously, the change in attitude and aggressiveness should be more like Tenuta, than anything we have had since then. However, I think we need to temper our expectations just a bit. So many of us, myself included, seem to get too hyped about the awesome talent coming in. IMO, if they were truly that great, they would have played as freshmen. I think we have done some better recently in our D recruiting, but it remains to be seen how they can actually contribute. I am cautiously optimistic. If we can make a noticeable step up on D , with a healthy O line and a serious passing threat at QB , we will go to a major bowl next year. I'm trying not to get my hopes unrealisticly high.

I honestly don't think fans expect or demand all that much. From what I've seen, if we're blitzing or being aggressive, but we just get beat with a good play call, that's football. What I've generally seen that's drove people bananas is 3rd and 5 and we line everyone up 8 yards off the line and then back peddle at the snap.

There is plenty of blame to go around this year on offense and defense. But if we'd just have had a kicker this year, we would have beat Tennessee, Miami, and Virginia. That's the difference between being 5-6 and 8-3. That alone would satisfy 99% of the fan base. With UCF and a bowl game thats a chance to win 9 or 10 games in a season.

Great observation there bwelbo. It is a game of inches and it usually is a few small things that seperate a mediocre season from a really good one. We, like 95% of the college football teams out there fall into that category. Just got to have a group that recognizes this and will fight their tails off to win those few small things that ultimately lead to winning the game(s).

PS - I would think Coach Woody would really like to land Jamarcus Chatman and one really good linebacker.

I’ll respectfully disagree. When Tenuta was being agressive (when wasn’t he aggressive?) and we got burned for big plays, the fanbase lost their minds over giving up big plays / missed tackles etc. No scheme change will ever change this. Only 100% success rate will.

I suspect we would focus on a legit pass rush OLB who can also change direction and cover TEs and RBs in the pass game.

The one that really comes to mind for me was 2004 VT at home, we were up but lost the game on two long touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

To be fair though i believe all fanbases lose their minds over loses like that. Also our offense collapsed in the 2nd half of that game but people blame it all on the D.

I'd like to believe this is true, but I'm willing to bet if we have a bad defensive game a couple of years from now, then people will be griping that we didn't "play it safe" once we got a lead.

Ryan was throwing insanely accurate passes. The corners were in fantastic position, and the ball was getting to receivers by an eyelash. I thought the defense played really well in that game, but Ryan had an absolute monster game that made him a top draft pick.

At least some of them will. But I at least remember how many games we've lost to prevent defense.
