You didn’t say anything false. That doesn’t mean you’re not wrong. Tech would be fine without UGA on the schedule, but it’s a moot point because COFH isn’t going anywhere.
Fine in that the program would exist? Sure. Fine in that program would have any publicity nationally or regionally unless, like I said, we were competing for ACC Championships and NY6 games regularly? No. When is the last time you heard anybody get excited for a Duke vs. Boston College game? Or NCSU vs. Syracuse? Or Virginia vs. Pitt? Hell, hardly any ACC games even get televised on national TV as it is.
Last year, the ACC featured these games on national TV:

I won’t count Notre Dame as a conference team, but will note when they play a national game vs. an ACC opponent

Week “Zero”
  • Miami vs. Florida (only game played that week)
Week 1
  • 3 total appearances
  • Zero intra-conference matchups
  • Notre Dame featured
Week 2
  • 3 total appearances
  • Zero intra-conference matchups
  • Clemson featured
Week 3
  • 4 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Friday Night game
  • Clemson featured
Week 4
  • 4 total appearances
  • 1 intra-conference matchup
Week 5
  • 3 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • Clemson featured
  • Notre Dame featured
  • 1 Friday night game
Week 6
  • 1 total appearance
  • 1 intra-conference matchup
Week 7
  • 3 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Friday night game
  • 1 Thursday night game
  • Clemson featured
Week 8
  • 2 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Friday night game
  • Clemson featured
Week 9
  • 2 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
Week 10
  • 3 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • Notre Dame featured
Week 11
  • 2 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • Clemson featured
Week 12
  • 2 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Thursday night game
  • Clemson featured
Week 13
  • 3 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Thursday night game
  • Notre Dame featured
Week 14
  • 4 total appearances
  • 2 intra-conference matchups
  • 1 Friday afternoon game
  • Clemson featured
That gives up a grand total of 39 total, and 2.78 nationally televised games per week, featuring an ACC team (40 & 2.67 of you count the Miami vs. UF game.)
Take away the 7 Thursday and Friday games that didn’t take place on rivalry week, and you get 2.28 ACC games per Saturday.

Clemson and Notre Dame were featured in 12 of the 39 total games, or about 30%.

Only 22 of the games featured an ACC vs. ACC matchup, or 1.57 per week.
Take out the 7 weekday ACC vs. ACC games and you only get 15 intra-conference games on Saturdays

With 18 non-conference games including the UM vs. UF game:
6 were against SEC teams (15% of total games)
4 were against Notre Dame (10% of total games)
That’s 25% of the total ACC national games.

For the past 5 years Tech basically has gotten 3-4 national games per year.
  • 1 Thursday/Friday night game
  • 1 vs. Clemson
  • 1 vs. Miami
  • 1 vs. Georgia
Losing that Georgia game makes Tech even more irrelevant regionally and nationally than it already is. The only way you could combat losing that game would be competing for title. But if we’re competing for titles, the COFH games should be competitive as well. There’s absolutely no benefit for Tech to drop the UGA game other than a chance to better the record, but unless you’re winning 10 games your record is already irrelevant. Not to mention the lost revenue of a guaranteed sellout

I think this is overblowing the importance of the matchup on TV. This game has been a noon game for the last 6 years. We go head to head with Ohio St/Mich which gets far more attention. When the game is at UGA it gets thrown on the SEC network, cutting the viewership even further. It’s basically irrelevant from a regional or national standpoint. This past years game had less viewers than the VT/UVA game. If it were dropped in its current state, I honestly don’t think it would hurt either team. The onus is on us to improve and make it competitive again. If we can’t do that then eventually it will probably be better for both programs to part ways.

Can you tell me what I said that was false? Was it that Tech sells 70% fewer tickets per city capita? Was it that Tech doesn’t sell out one of the smallest major college football stadiums in the southeast (19th smallest out of 65 P5 members + 2 independents in Notre Dame and BYU) , located in the most populous metro area in the southeast, and the 9th most populous in the entire country? Was it that UGA can very easily play 3 games in Atlanta per year without ever playing Tech? Was it that UGA already has more fans in Atlanta than Tech does? UGA already has a very well established recruiting pipeline to metro ATL, they wouldn’t lose any of that pull by not playing Tech.

As far as why has UGA not already cancelled the series, well.... they voted against adding a +1 game to the SEC schedule in order to avoid the Tech game. USCe was the only SEC school to vote yes, why? Because their series is as lopsided as COFH is. They need to play Clemson way more than Clemson needs them. UGA has never had a reason to cancel the COFH hate game. Through the 90s the series was still competitive, and even though they were building a lead, Tech was still winning 3-4 games per decade. Now it’s basically a “buy game” for them that they get for free, and it looks better on a playoff resume to beat a P5 team than it does another Sun Belt team. UGA has won 9 COFH games by 20+ points since the last time Tech won by 20, and Tech has only won 8 games all-time by 20 or more. The last 20 point Tech win came in 1974. UGA literally plays Tech to try and embarrass us. They have nothing else to gain from it in the modern era. Was there a time when they needed the game just as much, if not more, than Tech did? Yes. But that time was 60+ years ago. Times have changed, and UGA has “outgrown” the need to play Tech. The rivalry exists now mainly for historical and sentimental purposes, while they get the added benefit of embarrassing one of their rivals on a pretty much annual basis.
I think you’re glossing over a few factors.
ugag gets what they consider a sure win against a P5 school (worth more than a G5 or FCS game) on top of stoking their fan base with a historic rival. When we win it ups the ante for the next game and resets the hate. If in fact they voted against the +1 it was probably simply the fact that they knew it wouldn’t pass.

This argument is stupid and it’s pretty easy to counter...

uGA: you need is more than we need you. We get no benefit from playing Tech, it’s a guaranteed win that doesn’t benefit

Tech: if it’s a guaranteed win, why worry about playing?

uGA: if we lose it details our season

Tech: But you just said it’s a guaranteed win...so you’re worried you’re going to lose?

uGA: no, but IF we do, it’s bad, and it’s not good if we win

...literally the worst logic ever. So what they’re describing is the relationship they have with FCS...except that they’re actually worried about losing to Tech even though they aren’t saying it. Otherwise they wouldn’t opt out. If they’re going to replace us with Ohio State or Clemson then sure, I get it. But to argue that it’s of no benefit to play and say that it’s a guaranteed win is just stupid. Then why not play us instead of Mercer...at least you can brag to your rival...or at least someone that considers you their rival.

It’s actually pretty pathetic.

This all has nothing to do with whether or not they really want to play us. It comes down to 2 elements:

A. Game is a lose-lose for them. They beat us, they’re supposed to. Ho hum, just another year. They lose to us, well they’re laughed at.

B. Keeping the man down. Say what you want but CPJ did not really compete with mutt for recruits. He recruited Naval Academy style at GT, not mutt style. Two different universes, with small numbers of overlap. They knew the scheme would beat them occasionally & that was their excuse crutch. They have no such luxury with CGC. They want to put CGC in his place early so he cannot get traction. If he ever beats them in the first 6 years it will turn heads. I’m sure they’re watching everyone we’re recruiting & believe me they’ll go hard after anyone really elite just to make sure we don’t get that recruit. They don’t want him even to come close to being able to compete. They recruited CPJ recruits just so he couldn’t have them, just the frequency was a lot lower. This is all about making a public statement “you’re not in our league”. We’re in the SEC & we’re NFL ready dope smoking moped destroyers and women beaters. You guys are those nerds that can’t field a competitive team. It’s about all that complicated.

A. How is that any different than who they would replace us with? They’re not going to drop in Clemson

B. Strange strategy. Probably a good way to keep losing to Alabama and Clemson.

At first I thought the game may go away, but honestly I’d be surprised if the series goes anywhere. As already stated, for one...there are contracts in place to play the games. But beyond that you can say what you want about the younger uGA fans, but the older ones still very much enjoy playing and beating Tech. And they still run the show because they give the most money.

A. You do what Bammer does- add a name ie VT, Duke, etc and nobody cares at the end of the day. You win the SEC East, lose in the title game & lobby the media to make you #4 because you play in the bigggg badddd Ess Eee Cee.

B. They’re morons and that strategy is exactly why they keep losing to Bammer, Clemson, etc.

The Athletic just demoted Tech and took away our beat writer.

She now does Tech and the Falcons, I believe, after the AJC poached The Athletic's Falcons beat writer.
Other locations of The Athletic, from what I hear, have had to lay people off. Subscriptions are their lone source of revenue right now. They don't have ads as another stream.
So they may not have the resources to go and get another person to add to the staff
