Eric what do you think of Carolina's pick

I really wanted DJ Humphries...I like his upside and our biggest need is OT

Need OT, CB and WR.

LB wasn't a big need...

I like Shaq though...think he will be a solid player and the Panthers LB corp is going to be really good.

Don't think Shaq is a elite player but will be a solid starter.

I am glad we didn't take a stretch and get TJ Clemmings though.

Now need OT. Bad.

I haven't seen Dupree show the ability to shed blockers any more so than Beasley. He weighs 20 pounds more, but he isn't any stronger, and in my opinion Beasley is a better hand fighter. I was okay with either one of them personally, but Beasley is better IMO. I really wanted them to try and trade back 5-6 spots, get a 2nd/3rd round pick from someone and then grab one of them at that later 1st round spot, but either they didn't try that, or no one was interested in moving up from the 12-15 spot, which is where I would've tried to move to in order to get either one of them. It would've been nice to have that extra pick to use to possibly move up in the second round to get Collins or Gregory, even though he is a risk.

Dupree does get in trouble by using his body to get into blockers as opposed using his hands...but that's something that can be worked on. What I find more attractive about Dupree is he was ultra productive on a Kentucky defense where he was the key defender getting the most attention. As @Sean311 mentions, you can't say the same thing about Beasley who benefitted from playing on a STACKED defense and wasn't the main focus of other teams. Over the last 3 years playing in the SEC, Dupree AVERAGED 76 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks. You compare that to Beasley who averaged under 40 total tackles, BUT did have some nasty numbers for tackles for losses (20+) and sacks (12+) the last two years. It confirms what we've said...Dupree is the better overall defender at a premium position, and Beasley is the better pass rushing specialist. To me, the advantage goes to Dupree because of his ability to play on every down, yet have the same kind of impact that Beasley has.

As scouts have mentioned, Dupree was probably hurt by the fact that he was asked to do too much at Kentucky. Athletically, he can play almost anywhere on the front 7 which UK asked him to do, so he never really developed a "specialty" skillset at any one position. He won't be asked to do that in the NFL so he can focus on technique (like using his hands against blockers). Vic Beasley ran a 4.53 forty...but Dupree was right there with him with a 4.57 forty.

I think it comes down to preference. At the pick Atlanta has, I just want to see an impact guy who is more versatile and can play on every down and doesn't need to be protected in situations.

Should’ve went with TJ Clemmings. Michael Oher is terrible… We “upgraded” from the worst Tackle in the league to the 2nd worst.

Beasley ran the second fastest time for OLB/DE a 4.53 I believe. He also had the most reps with 35, the second best verticle, the second best broad jump, the second best shuttle, and the third best 3 cone drill. He's a freak of an athlete.

Also to answer someone talking about him taking plays off... he's not an every down player in the NFL. He's not a run stopper in most situations. He'll play 3rd down and other pass situations. He's a better bruce Irvin, and that is the spot Dan Quin wanted to fill. He will generate a pass rush to help our corners, which are really solid up and coming players. Great pick IMO.

And Beasley put up those numbers after adding 11 pounds of muscle between the end of the season and the combine. He didn't lose a step.

He's a monster and has every physical tool to be a perennial beast in the NFL.

I agree I feel like Beasley was just a product of an all around great defense.. I wish they got Shane Ray..makes sense why they didn't though. I hope the Falcons get John Crockett.. I love his energy. Then they should draft Shaq, Smelter and Waller in that order lol.

Strongly disagree with Shane Ray. He has stats, but every single measurable on him screams bust. His arms are short. He's slow. He's not that strong. Measurables > stats as the guy who kept Ray off the field for 3 years, Michael Sam, proved out.

He made his living on a great DL by being great at timing snap counts. That's not going to be enough in the NFL.

I thought Shaq was a bit of a reach too. We really didn’t have many good options at that spot.

Not for what we need...

I actually was kinda mulling over Nelson Agholor for that spot if DJ was gone...but Nelson was off the board earlier than I expected.

Second round is big for us.

Really the rest of the draft is...have to hit on OT and WR picks.

For the Falcon's sake, I hope so.
I'm happy. I wanted Beasley more than any pass rusher on the board. Shane disappears. Dupree is raw & disappears. Beasley was way more productive and consistent even against top competition. He wont be every down, he'll be situational and that perfectly fine with me. Heck I hope we snatch Gregory now and close the door on pass rush.

Shane Ray is someone that is a project imo, all he really has is speed besides that nothing else is that great. I like his motor and that he doesn't stop but I think his ceiling isn't as high as beasley.

I love how on the Falcons bleacher report they showed how fast beasley was by a clip of him making a ugag tackle look stupid and annihilating their qb Lol.

I will say, Beasley is definitely one of the better defensive picks the Falcons have made in the Arthur Blank era.

Thomas played a position (MLB) that allows intelligence to overperform physical abilities. You read games from that position, you follow plays, and you lead the defense. That's why Keith Brooking, Brian Urlacher and Ray Lewis can play until they're 92.

None of those apply to and edge rusher.

Thomas was also a 5th round pick. If you want to say Ray is a quality pick in the 5th round, I won't argue with you one bit.

Beasley has a ton of upside IMO. The guy was a 6'-4", 195lb athlete out of high school. He is still fairly new to the position and will continue to improve. He will be the best pass rusher the Falcons have the minute he gets to Flowery Branch. It will be interesting to see what the Falcons do tonight... my guess is O-Line and the best available RB/Safety at their spot.

Ok well Shane Ray is 4 inches taller and faster than Elvis Dumervil who has had plenty of success at the same position. Ray has longer arms than Jared Allen and Terrell Suggs… I’m really not seeing how his measurables are bad at all. I’m not saying Shane Ray is going to be good I’m just defending the fact that his measurables are fine.
