O'Leary had graduate assistants who followed players to class, received attendance reports from professors and reported those back to O'Leary every single day... I can also tell you that had O'Leary's approach still been in place that Jabari Hunt-Days would very likely still be eligible for this upcoming season.
I didn't know GT profs took attendance. None of mine did. If you came only on test day and passed your tests, you passed, for the most part.

So O'Leary never had one kid flunk out of GT his entire career? I guess his "approach" really was flawless. That and there was no APR conditions and guys didn't have to stay on a grad track.

Seriously, attacking CPJ for the failings of JHD is pretty funny. JHD's own parents know who's to blame. CPJ's APR record speaks pretty loudly about his commitment to academics and academic support.

Yeah, I know...I was just typing from my iPad and didn't want to have to retype all that crap to go back & look to see who had typed it. No offense meant.

Trust me, none taken. I can totally relate.

I don't think it would be like an official attendance report for the class. More like an agreement between the prof and the coach. That's what I imagine anyway.

My wife taught US Government at Tech while CCG was here. Even after Flunkgate they weren't necessarily keeping tabs on the students. She had Calvin Johnson, Philip Wheeler and Elris Anyaibe from the football team in her class. One of these guys didn't really participate and was failing at both Drop Day and after Mid-Term. She was never asked to provide status reports, was never approached by anyone associated with the GTAA. He eventually pulled his grade up, but there was never any contact from the coaching staff/advisement group. On the other hand, there was a freshman on the Track team that was struggling a little. There was an academic advisor that asked after him and followed up to make sure he was doing what needed to be done.

Bad defensive line = bad defense. You simply cannot scheme around it. We are going to get dominated in the trenches by good offensive lines.

I don't think we have the horses to win shootouts either.

I would not be surprised to see us give up 200+ on the ground multiple times this year.

yep
this team is little like '67 after '66 strong yr-- with a both OL and , esp DL, weaker with decent/good assets around those lines.Without the production up front ,the good teams will hurt us-again.
btw-the guy had an interesting fix on our unique constancy

Here's what I said:

Johnson has been much better about this...to a degree. Whereas, our graduation rates have improved and that has gained CPJ a measure of limited leeway with the academic side of the house, he still uses more of a trusting approach than the coach who I think had the right approach for GT academics...O'Leary.

Do you really think that's attacking someone?
I said if he implemented the policy of checking on students' attendance daily, then it would have potentially kept JHD on the team. I understand and agree with you 100% that it's JHD's fault. But I also think (as I stated in the earlier post) that every coach @ Tech should employ O'Leary's policy.

And yeah, O'Leary found out daily when his players didn't attend classes. Hell, we have a few of his players on this message board, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe they'll weigh in. How did he do it? Sometimes GA's escorted them to class, sometimes GA's asked if the players were in class. For all I know, he had the NSA checking on them. But he knew.

Did it stop everyone from failing out? I'm sure it didn't but it beats finding out after the class is over when there's nothing the coach can do about it.

Sorry for sounding like a jerk and I know O'Leary was obsessive compulsive about his players attendance. But I think CPJ has the perfect balance between O'Leary's babysitting and Gailey's laissez faire approach... just look at his academic progress record.

CPJ's and Gailey's performance has been about the same. http://gtswarm.com/community/thread...comparing-teams-under-different-coaches.2501/

Here are the Scout Class rankings from about 2002 to 2014,
51 34 35 48 49 15 37 32 41 45 59 72 47

We are recruiting about the same with the exception of the 2007 class (15th) and 2103 class (72nd). That tends to explain the Gailey 2002-7 average of 38th and CPJ 2008-14 average of 48th. Take those two years out, and they are the same at 43.5. Yea, I'm cherry picking data, but just pointing out they are about the same. I think this year's class (currently 49th) will pick up some steam and be in the 30's before it's all over.

I think Rivals is probably more accurate this year, but I don't follow all the other teams recruiting closely enough to offer anywhere a near valid opinion. I do know we are getting lots of our A list guys earlier, so we are doing better. Now to hold on and keep the momentum .........

I don't know if they're accurate or not and frankly don't care. I was just pointing out the discrepancy between two different "expert" talent evaluators.

We're on the same page. Like I just pointed out elsewhere, Paul Davis was a 2 star by Scout. I think the services are in the general ball park for 4 and 5 stars. Then 3 stars it's really hard to differentiate. There is so much that is subjective since they don't play standard competition or their teams may not support their position or another star on their team may give them lots of opportunities ........

I like using Scout since I have the data back to 2002 - mainly for continuity since I agree its all a crap shoot for the 3 stars. At the risk of being repetitive, we are getting who we want. That is the most important thing to me.

This guy's analysis does not match with his rating. No way we are as good as he thinks and finish the 55th best program/record in America. Historically we are a 30 to 39 type of ranking each year. Nothing too exciting but pretty solid. We need to move into the top 25 and stay there. That is what I thought Johnson could and would deliver. It looks like I was wrong about that.

Go Jackets!

I also think Rivals might be a bit more accurate as to where we are today. And even though I hope we end up higher, I think this is about where we'll finish the season.
