I'm talking in-game adjustments. I'm sure they'll keep practicing to try to improve on what they don't do well, but they're going to do what it takes to win on Saturday.
I think u were clear.

Imo, Listening to Key, then tiday hearing King on ACCN, and Singletary on post practice, the common tone is we need to capture our explosiveness. Singletary was answering question about him getting more running. He was joyful when describing how fakukner and wr had been watching pro gamet tapes were they use this as a a new wrinkle.

In 23 Louisville the 28 point 2nd quater is not what needs to be moderated. Its the 3 quarters when we scored 6 ponits that need to be consistent with our identity.

Also, i think in this game we are moving off any certainty the defense will be the solid difference maker ( UL has 2 each 6-9" DT to slow pass rush and qb that can pass). We will bring pressure and play close to los.

This may not work out in this game, but this is our identity that we will work to perfect by Uga. .

@gtrower 's ypc is yards per carry, and matches the data here
https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/yards-per-rush-attempt

That would put us at 19th in the former P5+ND. Pretty dang good, especially when you consider we've played more opponents and more P4/5 opponents than just about everyone.

I'm not sure where your rankings are from as they don't correlate to anything on that site that I can tell. I assume your ypc is per completion and ypa per attempt for passing - if so, I'm not sure how that would be a reflection on the OL performance.
Data's off the NCAA stats site but was looking at without the VMI slaughter. We should be better than all but a handful of the P whatevers (the old 1-AA crowd) plus 3/4 of the P4 crowd before we start declaring ourselves great. We might learn a good bit at Louisville, but then again we thought we learned a lot from Dublin. Turned out free shoes was more like ga st than ohio state.

@yeti, you seem to want our OL to be seen as having performed great so far this season. The fact is, it hasn’t. Yes, they have kept King clean, and that’s very good, but a lot of that is his and CBF’s doing.

Even if they’re #19 for ypc in P4, that’s barely top 1/3. Looking game by game, it’s been up and down - more up than down, except for SU. Again, they’re overall good, but not great. That SU game was not good for 3.5 quarters.

I gave the OL a B when I rated them in my previous post. I think that should tell you how I see them.

"Barely top 1/3" is not a bad spot to be - if all of our units operated at that level I'd be ecstatic and we'd be a top 25 team. But sure sounds like you are trying to minimize their performance so far and also it ignores the other context that I provided of teams like Louisville who have not played a real opponent yet and have inflated numbers because of it. Let's check back at the end of the season and see where we are then? Maybe at the same time we can review our OL play from 2019- 2022 and see how far we've come.

We've hashed out the OL play against Syracuse multiple times already. The pass blocking was quite good and King almost always had plenty of time, and the stats bear that out. The run blocking was not as good, however we were very predictable on when we would run early on and Cuse was often able to sellout and bring extra guys to stop the run because of it. You are clearly convinced otherwise and likely not willing to go back and rewatch the game, iiwii.

And none of this has anything to do with the question I asked GT33 about what passing stats ypc and ypa have to do with the OL performance.

We're 37th in ypc and 35th in ypa, 31st in scoring offense. There's 67 teams in P4 plus ND & xPac. We're decidedly average or you could argue slightly below. Great? No way.
We should probably wait for at least mid season to evaluate. Look at who teams have played. Louisville for example has played two nobody’s and is averaging 50 per game, I doubt they will stay at that level come conference play.

Yes, you did, and I agree. As to why I don't go back and watch the game, here are the PFF grades for our O for the SU game. Bear in mind that 60's are average, 70's are above average and 50's are below average. As you said, IIWII.

RT Jordan Williams - 70.5
RG Keylan Rutledge - 70.1
C Weston Franklin - 64.5
LT Jordan Brown - 47.9
LG Joe Fusile - 46.6

TE Avery Boyd - 80.8
TE Jackson Hawes - 67.4
TE Josh Beetham - 60.9
TE Ryland Goede - 54.2

Figured since this was a Leo B thread

He and Zach have developed quite the chemistry…not a bad throw for a “running qb” I’d say. A lot forget Zach was an Elite 11 finalist finishing in the top 11 in a group that included Quin Ewers, Malik Murphy, Drew Allar, Cade Clubnik, etc. And all these guys are starting. Zach will be the first to tell you, he’s still learning the intricate parts to Qb mechanics simply due to him playing in an offense that some games he never threw a pass, and they only spent 10 minutes one day a week at practice working on it. But he’s working with a Qb coach that he’s even meeting with during the season. This guy has worked with Burrow, Stroud, Levis, the list goes on.

But I cannot even begin to tell you how happy we are for Leo. Kid is a fighter.

I sure hope we get to see Zach do a lot more of that soon.

I tend to take PFF grades with a grain of salt since they are based on a 3rd party's opinion of what they think a player was supposed to do on a given play, but fair enough. Does PFF provide any more clarity on what specifically they think they did poorly or not, or just the rating?

I just went and watched the first 3 quarters and a little of the 4th of the condensed game specifically for the play of Brown and Fusile. There were a few plays where both pulled and someone came through that spot (eg King's 1st TD). IDK if they were both supposed to pull or not and maybe there was confusion, but we did it several times so I'm kind of thinking it was intentional. Outside of that, I really didn't see any big issues from the two of them that hurt us. They kept their guy(s) off of King and generally far away on pass plays, and were able to win or stalemate on run plays. They weren't just kicking their opponent's butt and pancaking them every time, but whoever lined up across from them was generally a non-factor. There was 1 play around the 12 minute mark in the 4th Q where Fusile got knocked on his butt by a blitzing linebacker and the linebacker and 2 guys coming off the left side all got to the ball carrier - it appeared Fusile and Brown were supposed to block down towards the center, but Fusile getting knocked back messed that up.

Our pass coverage was hands down the biggest problem that game. Rewatching, we actually got good penetration a lot, to where if McCord had to hold the ball 1/2-1 second longer on pass plays, he would have gotten absolutely lit up several times. He made a number of throws under heavy pressure, but the DBs were often out of position, unaware the ball had been thrown, or giving 5 yard cushions that made finding an open target pretty easy. King by comparison had plenty of time to throw and really never had anyone pressuring him, at least through the portion I just rewatched.

That was a nice motion on that throw. It shows that he has been working on it.

Thanks. Again, OL pretty good, not great. We keep saying almost the same thing but I’m using fewer words so I win.

I give the OL the following grades...

FSU: A+
GSU: C
Cuse: D-
VMI: N/A

That is about a C+ average. Perhaps the performance against GSU and Cuse was a product of our travel schedule, but they have not looked good since the first game. I do not count the VMI game as they are not big or good enough to give our team a grade

Always felt Zach and Leo have more chemistry than Haynes and Leo on the field.

They do have very strong chemistry. Leo is an exceptional teammate. They are two dudes that are truly team first and play for the logo on the front of the jersey and not the name on the back. Their time is coming.
That is awesome to hear. It takes maturity to watch as others play as you wait your time.

I just want to say that I love that your kid is on our team. I love his fight, I love his tenacity, I love his patience. It will make him successful jn whatever he goes pro in, whether that is football or something else. He’s a natural winner. As a father of a 26 and 24 year-old sons, I’m not a fan of the mustache.
