I have referred to Sims as a Coach Killer. He is that guy that has so much potential that you keep investing in him hoping that potential will eventually turn into performance. Unfortunately, it never has. Oh sure we have seen flashes but never the consistency required to be a winner at the D1 level of college football. I've seen this many times in my 70-plus years of watching football. I think we would be best served at this point to support whoever we trot out there. I would definitely give the other 2 or 3 guys riding the bench a look as well. Gibson will improve some but with our offensive line, it would take a Michael Vick / Lamar Jackson-type athlete to move the offense forward. Unfortunately, we don't have that so we better figure out how to maximize what we do have.

Go Jackets!
Reggie Ball was also a coach killer.

it’s 2022 college football. qb ability includes rushing. you will not see teams going far in their conference or into the bowl season without a qb with good legs
Is he even a good runner? Yes he is fast, but what else. He won't lower his shoulder and truck anyone. He has terrible awareness of the sticks and getting that yard for a first. His pocket awareness or "escape ability" is not good.

Before the pitt game, I would have agreed with you. But against Pitt and Duke he became a commanding runner who did truck people and fight for the last yard. He also is pretty good at making the first man miss on his runs.

2 games didn't change my mind. Marcus M went what 12/13 last week against the niners. He is that good? One game yes. Or 2. Too much tape that says otherwise. He is a great guy to talk to. His moral belief system is on point. Not a good qb. Neither am i and the world will go on.

He's our QB and there's really no gain in dumping on him. I think if he was healthy in that game last night we would have won it, as it would have forced them to account for the RPO. As it was we had zero RPO, they knew it early, and forced us to pass the ball. Can we prove it...of course not. But it also can't be disproven either.

Seemed to work fine for Alabama, Michigan, and I'd argue Georgia last year.
stetson and bryce young are WAYYYYYYY more mobile than gibson and i wouldn’t call them runners in the same sense as lamar jackson/mike vick, but they can move. bama also had blake sims, jalen hurts, and tua prior to the hip injury that all had the capability of moving at varying degrees of effectiveness

you are also comparing teams that are able to recruit much bigger and better o lines. we don’t have that luxury right now and it’s not going to get to that level soon.

we need a qb that can move a little bit. gibson isn’t that

So we've moved from 'qb rushing', which those teams do not do, to generic 'mobility.' Interesting.

I'm aware but I'm not talking about those teams. I'm talking about the team led by Bryce Young. Who had a grand total of 81 rushing attempts and 0 yards. And yes I am also aware that sack numbers count towards rushing totals.

Hey man, what you said was 'you will not see teams going far in their conference or into the bowl season.' I did see it. I'm continuing to see it. Didn't realize it came with all these unspoken qualifications that certain teams didn't count when you said that.

Good thing I'm not advocating for Gibson to start then.

funny thread to look back on

It really isn't if you, like I said before, actually read it or aren't actively looking for message board clout for some reason.

Sims can be under performing relative to his physical tools while showing a lack of development and still be our best option because the other QBs on the roster are worse. The two ideas are not mutually exclusive. Yet again, this is not a difficult concept to understand.

Did Sims get injured again, or benched?
Maybe someone watching on television could see our sideline better than I?

Unless we improve both sides of line of scrimmage, it wont matter who we have as QB.. We can Mike Vick back there and I dont think it would matter. I dont think we can accurately judge the QB's performance unless they have some kind of consistent protection.

How is both lines so bad with all of the coaches being here for this long? Key has been in charge of OL and for that reason, Im not too keen on him being here after this season.

Whattaya mean "no clout"? The only reason I am on here is to get street cred with my Florida buddies and the FSU and Miami fans that I play tennis with. You are saying that I put all this effort into posting and there is no benefit beyond self gratification? Bummer.

So in summary, had Sims not been gimpy he would have added an extra threat for Virginia to contend with but, since he couldn’t run, Virginia’s defense could tee off on the passer, at which they got better and better as the game wore on. Sims and the offense was getting stuffed more and more leading up to the injury. Again, had Sims been healthy, it might have been a different game.

Gibson is slower and not as athletic as Sims, obviously. But he was further hindered by not ever having seen any live action and not having worked out the timing with WRs and RBs under game conditions. I still contend that giving back up QBs game experience helps if and when the starter goes down with an injury.

We are a weak team. Whoever comes in as coach has a total rebuilding job on their hands with this offense. The defense shows promise.

According to theacc.com, Georgia Tech has the worst offense in the ACC and Sims is the worst passer in the ACC. Sims is a bad quarterback and Gibson is worse.
That's after 3 years of trying. We've been clamoring for a back up QB & we bring in the 3rd choice. I don't know about anyone else but I had about as much interest in seeing another MAC-E hero as I did the 1st one taking carries from Dontae. That dog didn't hunt either. We have a 4 star back in Taisun that's seen live ACC action and drove the field for a score. We have the 4 star kid from Alabama that's never played a game. Who do we bring in- the mediocre MAC-E kid that folds like a cheap tent. Doesn't even have the will to win. Says a lot about the staff. Bad judgment. Hopefully Batt is not cursed with the bad judgment disease.

But at least it’s not an historic rebuilding job…

Absolutely. Gibson should have seen some action during mop-up in the Ole Miss game. It would have helped.

I didn't get around to saying this in the Zack Gibson thread before it got locked, but while I understand the criticism of him for running out of bounds (and he owned that it was a bad decision) it's a little disheartening to me that he was criticized for telling the truth about it. He could easily have said he lost track of the time and thought there was a tick or two left on the clock, but he didn't lie. Maybe his mom taught him not to lie. I admire his honesty. And it certainly isn't why we lost the game.
