ATLANTA, GA - The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets basketball team found itself in familiar territory: a chance to win their first ACC game of the year in a tightly contested game. Once again the Yellow Jackets (9-10, 0-7) failed to pull out a win, this time losing 64-62 to Boston College (9-9, 1-5) Sunday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.
Despite running out to a quick 14-7 lead just five minutes into the game, the Yellow Jackets founding themselves trailing by 10 just over five minutes into the second half. During that 20+ minute stretch the Jackets hit what has become a characteristic lull, scoring only 16 points and stagnating for extended periods of time in their half-court offense.
The Eagles took advantage. Flowing what Marcus Georges-Hunt estimated as "90%" of Boston College's offense through star shooting guard Olivier Hanlan, Georgia Tech could not keep pace. Hanlan scored from all over the court: penetrating off the dribble, sharpshooting from deep, and by moving without the ball.
Hanlan made his two biggest plays after two momentum-shifting runs by Tech. The first came after Tech cut the Eagles' lead to 52-48 with 5:31 to go in the game. With the home crowd on its feet and the Jackets defense energized for a stop, Hanlan launched an NBA-range three point dagger to quiet the crowd.
The second came after the Jackets stormed all the way back and tied the game 59-59 with 1:26 remaining. Sensing his defender overplaying him to the perimeter, Hanlan made hay off a backdoor cut and layup to give the Eagles a 61-59 advantage that proved to be too much for Tech to overcome.
It's no time for the Jackets to hang their heads and they have no intention to do so. Said Georges-Hunt following the game, "[We] need to stay positive. We play on Wednesday and we play Miami. There's no point in keeping my head down." Quinton Stephens backed his teammate with quiet confidence, "We're going to break through this wall, and we're going to do it together."
