Impact of the 2013 Class

Ok, the 2013 class was really small - only 14 and ranked 72nd by Scout.

But how are they doing? To try and answer that, I looked at the depth chart coming out of Spring: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...pth_chart_non_event/2014postspringdefense.pdf

{One big gripe is that ST is not listed at all. Anyone know of the depth chart for ST?? Damn important part of our game. End of bitching.}

Only 2 or 3 starters (if you count Commissiong who will probably start after suspension). Hopefully DeVine comes along. I also have hopes for Davis because of his attitude.

Ugly stuff. Almost has a flunkgate feel to it.

No chance Commissiong starts this year unless Green or Gotsis gets hurt. As far as I've seen Gamble and even Kallon have been ahead of him on the depth chart anyway.

These guys are true sophomores/redshirt freshmen. I wouldn't expect many starters at this point in their career.

very ugly...and to make it even uglier you really can't put Wilson in the 2 deep. He's not even close to Connors at this point.

Well, any critique of this class is a little premature, if you ask me. Surely the losses are a negative. There is no getting around that. However, where these guys stand on the depth chart at the moment is not a huge concern for me. I would be more worried if a high percentage of RFR were breaking the starting line up already. A healthy situation for the entire team results when young but talented guys struggle to get on the two deep initially. For example, seeing that Devine is not number 1 at LG causes me no worry. I have little doubt, beyond his own level of conditioning, that he will be a force. Our staff just isn't going to hand it to him and I don't blame them.

true...but better for it to implode sooner so that their replacements can be added to the team sooner than to linger and non perform for four or five years and be a wasted scholly. Right now we can sell playing time and a wide open depth chart on the dline. Pelton and Roof should be able to make that work. The other losses should have minimal to no impact. Lee.. We've got qbs. Henry wasn't in the three deep at a position . no depth. Autry would have been nice but as long as we have smelter everyone else a complementary piece. Roberts would have been a stud but no game is worth his health. Hopefully Laskey has a great year and Leggett, mld and Thomas come in and make the loss of custis less painful.. Either way except for the injured, and whatever happened with custis, the guys that want to be here are here and I will cheer them on if for no other reason than that!! THWG!!

The problem is going to be that come 2017 and 2018 that we will have to have a very small class because so few will be graduating. Right now there are only nine to leave from the class. The mismatch in class sizes was something that CPJ talked about a lot in the first two years here.

As Eric said elsewhere, he is hearing we are going to be using a lot of freshmen this year - we'll need to. That will help create openings. At this point we need to win now and forget about RS. We don't win and CPJ is gone. Then we get to "rebuild".

2015 at 25 people would be the largest class I have in my data since 2002. Here are the number of commits from 2002 to 2014 for GT (respectively of course):
12 21 24 19 14 20 20 21 18 22 17 14 21
Small class in 2002 (12), then 4 years in 2006 (14), then 4 years in 2012 (18) but then only 2 and 3 years to get 17 and 14 in 2012 &2013. So for w while we were somewhat stable and then everything seems to be going catawhumpus. (It is a word .)
