How Much Does GTAA get Every Time an ACC Team Wins a Tourney Game?

Gotta decide how badly I want to root against Duke and UNC in the next round...

But.....we get money for the losses too sooooooooooo it was worth correcting so when someone finds the number (it was $200k a couple years ago IIRC) they can get an accurate figure.

We get paid for appearances in each round, so a loss is the same as a win in a given round. However, if you lose, you obviously don't get to move on and appear in another game. At this point, if you want more $$$ for the ACC, you would root for everyone to advance.

For the Duke-haters, you do have the silver lining that they face Va Tech, so you can root against Duke and still feel good about the $$$

Correct. But Louisville and Syracuse didn’t get a W but the ACC still gets money for those games. Which was my point. So agaaaaaain. When someone figures the total, it’s appearances, not wins.

Each game played is worth around $280k for the conference. The pool over a 6 year period and total units with their annual worth is divided equally by the conference teams regardless of who plays. Thank God because we’ve contributed ZERO to the pool of money. Later years are worth more than earlier years, but good news for GT is the ACC’s 10 units for 2013 is being replaced by a minimum of 18 units this year. Everybody would have to lose in Sweet 16 except for Dook/VT and then they’d lose in Elite 8. Last year’s distro was $1.8M so this year will be at least another $100k. More good news is 2014 was only 10 units so the 2020 distro should be in excess of $2M.

So, if each appearance is worth (approximately) $280K for the conference and it is split evenly amongst all 16 teams, then GTAA gets $17,500 (again, speaking very roughly) from each appearance...and since a win does guarantee another appearance, each time an AC team wins it nets the GTAA about $17.5K. Cool. At least we get something from this. And now I can root against Duke against VPI&SU....and decide if it's worth $17.5K to root against UNC...LOL

There are only 15 teams, so it is $18,667 each.

Thus, in GT terms:

y = 18667n+18667x
where:
n= number of acc TEAMS in the tournament
x = number of acc WINS in the tournament
y = $$$ that GT gets

Then you divide it by 4, correct?

I also believe there is a two year lag

n=7
x=5
y=$224,004 in GT's pockets

They are paid over a 6 year period.

Again, games played is how it is calculated. Not wins. The championship game doesn't earn a unit regardless.

So if you have to use wins, it is wins +1 for wins up to the final four for participants.

With it being games played, wins do determine the value because wins are what create more games. But you are correct in that a win in the championship gets you nothing. So let's re calibrate the formula:

y = 18667(n+w-c)
where:
n= number of acc TEAMS in the tournament
w = number of acc WINS in the tournament
c = number of championships won by the acc

This is only for one year, so you do this for four years and then dump out the sum later. But for simplicity we can look at it as just one year at a time.

You don't get a unit for playing in the championship game. So you don't get a unit for winning a final four game.
