I don’t think it’s fair to blame the OL. They played Ok. QB (and honestly WR) play was bad today.

OL has not blocked the inside zone consistently well for several games now. That is our bread and butter. Makes everything else go. If they can shut down the inside with 4/5 then they have the personnel to slow the wide stuff, too. If our WR could make them pay deep it would be nice, but they cannot apparently.

It has been talked about here before but the inability to get receivers open vertically down the field is glaring with this team. Their DB's, like most teams before, are in step with our WRE's at all times. 0 separation. Given the speed, esp. with Singleton and Rutherford, this is very puzzling.

It’s hard to see on TV but it looked like there definitely were a few times that we were open not deep deep, but the intermediate/15 yards catch and run scenario. We just haven’t hit that all year. Everything is on/behind the LOS or a deep ball. I feel like that’s were Philo had some success throwing into that pocket, but granted, that is probably from the prevent from VT

Regarding WRs, dropped balls are obviously bad, but the narrative about them not getting separation doesn’t seem to me to be true. Philo was willing to cut it loose a lot more than king or pyron, and sure enough, there were guys open all over the field.

I was watching Ole Miss - OU game. You want to see WR's open, watch a game like that. 3-4 steps. We rarely see that. Singleton had that once today and Pyron got hit just as he was about to throw. It's always a step late.

ETA: Why? I believe it's because our guys run crappy, rounded routes. Just my $.02 worth.

I hate to do this, but if CPJ had these players with on O with a D performance like that we win by 2-3 scores.

That’s not an elite defense. It’s good, but nowhere near elite. We made them look like the 85 Bears. They didn’t do anything all that special. No crazy pressure. No disguised coverage. Just basic cover 2/3/4 that we couldn’t execute against. When Philo came in it looked like we had no confidence in his ability to throw.

We played without our best offensive and best defensive players, but our staff gave us basically zero chance with our offensive game plan. We went from playing in a phone booth to playing in a hallway. By the time we figured that out and put Philo in it was too late.

Buster studied pro offenses this summer. Supposedly to help HK be more efficient and reduce turnovers. For whatever reason, we are not as good on O as we were last year. Dontae was money second half of season last year. We stole one at Miami. HK stayed healthy all season. Birr hit FG's. D seems better this year (Santucci?).
We got pressure today on the qb and it showed. The D never quit today either.
Not sure where we go from here. I knew the team might be better but we have a tougher schedule this year.

Ok. But then why do we run that play on 3rd and 3 when we know they can’t execute it.

Staff should know these things. Just like setting the kicker up for yet another 50 yarder from the right hash - yeah, he made it but Jesus why would you do that in that situation.

From an offense and defense efficiency standpoint this game favors VT.

GT: 59th in offensive efficiency (with Haynes King) and 45th in defensive efficiency.

VT: 20th in offensive efficiency and 46th in defensive eficiency

A spread of 10.5 is probably about right and while I will not bet this one, I think the Jackets can keep it within a touchdown.

Caveat: if we hear that Pyron can not go, grab VT minus 10.5

59th in offensive efficiency before the game. Probably close to 66th or so afterward. I do not think we have to be concerned about CBF leaving us for a head gig after this season.

Zach had an uncharacteristically bad game today, hopefully he can shake it off and improve the next chance he gets. The offense as a whole started out effective outside of drive stopping mistakes, but just got worse and worse as the game went on.

Glad to see Birr make both field goals, need to get him back making them all.

Key had more wtf clock management moments.

Defense played well. Tackling was improved, did a good job shutting down their star RB. Great job of getting VT in 3rd and long and then defending it. Our run D is easily the best most consistent part of our team this year which is surprising to say the least.

Somebody else needs to field punts besides Shelley.

We all knew this was going to be a tough year and we would land somewhere between 5 and 7 wins. It just sucks because of injuries, but we had a chance at having a very good season. Regardless, I don’t think this changes my opinion of Buster. We have to remember, we had lots of injuries today

Oh, another thing. We called a TO on an extra point with roughly 2 min to go in the half for a fools hope that a QB dropped a TD pass. That’s how much confidence the staff had in our offenses ability to score in a 2 min scenario.

I agree but what else are you going to run? I like the slant. That seems to be a very successful play, but our best - Malik - was playing hurt today.

Ugh, that explains it. A pro offense in a college game is a round peg in a square hole. It doesn't fit.

Defense played one of the best games I’ve seen from them this year. Having Efford out to keep everyone straight probably hurt on some of VT’s trick plays and misdirection. Our offense didn’t do our defense any favors.

We continue to have a baffling inability to get receives open on deeper routes.

Not having King play and having Jamal banged up really stunted our offensive play making ability.

Seemed that our freshman substitutes, including Philo, played faster and quicker.

We may have one good game left in us but it will require some coaching magic as we reshuffle the lineup.

I will agree except for those 2 busted plays where the receiver ran uncovered. Missed assignments which led to 2 td's. Overall they played really well in the second half.
