They will not worry about any throws past ~20 yds from King unless he can he prove otherwise, thus cutting their coverage zone. Will make it very difficult for him to be effective I think. Definitely will need more snaps from Philo in my opinion.
Putting King at QB, with both Haynes and Philo in the backfield, would create some defensive confusion…

King’s injury seems pretty bad for him to be in that bad of shape after sitting out a month. It’s possible he needs surgery even if he doesn’t want to ever play football again. I have no clue what the guy is thinking, but it could be that he wants to get through the season and retire. Or maybe he wants to heal up and make one last run. He’s a gamer either way and I’m glad we’ve got him. Let’s hope there’s at least a little magic left for one more BIG win after Thanksgiving.

I'm also curious about that. Was Brent preparing a fake, and Cristobal caught on? Or was he just showing the look of one to get Mario to burn a time out?
Remember when we had a coach who sucked at game management and Dabo had his punt team shift and caused our guy to crap his pants and waste a timeout? Remember how Dabo laughed on TV and we all felt like throwing up? I’m so glad to no longer be on the receiving end of such things.

Very late posting due to having grandkids all weekend. :D Great job by our staff and players this week. Again, I will never fault Key for not having our players ready to give max effort - they, as always, gave an outstanding effort. Big win, and I hope that somehow it provides a recruiting boost.

I don't believe Miami is well coached - I think we all saw that last year. But, it is good to have coaches that can take advantage of that handicap.

Go Jackets!!

It is not that simple. So you willing to sit him next year and lose him for 8 games rather than one game this year, and when it is very possible we will not have Pyron as a backup? That makes no sense.

Fans also forget Philo and his family have a say in it. It's what Philo and coaching staff think is best for his future...what fans want or think isn't even on the decision tree.

Key genuinely cares about his players. He isn't going to burn an entire year of eligibility if he thinks Philo will play sparingly the rest of the year, regardless of the possibility he might not be at GT 3-4 years down the road. If Philo is needed, he'll be the first one to say he's not going to sit out to save his eligibility.

We really need Zach Pyron to be ready to go next Thursday.

Great job by the staff and players. What a beautiful gameplan on both offense and defense and the players did a great job executing it.
So happy they won.
Offense - A+ - first time since UNC that the offense was able to move the ball consistently in all 4 quarters (and scored in all 4 quarters). Didn't seem like Miami's D ever adjusted to what GT was doing. Was obvious when King was in that GT would run or throw a short pass. When Philo was in it was a likely longer pass. OL played great and receivers set the edges.

Defense - A+ - They basically used Miami's strength against them. Miami should have run more but were impatient. GT spent most of the day just rushing 3-4 and playing deep, basically giving up short throws. But Cam kept wanting to throw home run balls. Miami didn't want to march down the field, they wanted quick, chunk plays. He would hold on to the ball too long and sometimes get frustrated.

Special Teams - B - no issues here this week. Only negative was returning KO's out of the EZ and then not making it even to the 20, cost offense field position. Just take the ball at the 25.

I felt we could win (Miami had clearly shown it was vulnerable), didn't think we would win, especially without a fully healthy King - but so happy to be wrong.

You’re right about the bold, but it’s funny because I spent the entire first half thrilled that Miami was working so hard to (unsuccessfully) establish the run. I was nervous for when they’d unleash Ward to sling it everywhere.

First drive of the third quarter they marched right down the field on ALL runs. That drive pretty much equaled their entire first half rushing yardage. Drive ended on an incompletion (the only throw of the drive) on 4th and 1… hmmm.

After that, they ran the ball TWICE the rest of the game.

The second drive of the third quarter was a Cam Ward passing clinic and I think that drive along with the previous empty trip caused them to go all in for the passing game.

We can only defend what they run at us, and I chose to believe that we had guys ready to come downhill in run support if they did it. Maybe Santucci saw a tendency and knew they’d abandon the run late? If so, even more kudos warranted.

FWIW, GT gets a nice mention in Pat Forde's Forty-Yard Dash this week.

Forde-Yard Dash: Nine Secret Weapons Teams Are Relying on This Season
Defense and special teams can help win football games, but an old-man quarterback and ball control also have been difference makers.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ run-pass ratio
When Brent Key’s team can establish a running game and avoid over-reliance on passing, they tend to win. Average number of pass attempts in Tech’s six victories: 24.7. Average number of pass attempts in Tech’s four losses: 39.7. Run-pass ratio in wins: 63% run, 37% pass. Run-pass ratio in losses: 44% run, 55% pass.

It certainly has helped Tech when its most effective running quarterback, Haynes King, is healthy. Without him, the Jackets chucked it 86 times in consecutive losses to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Virginia Tech Hokies. When King came back for the Miami game Saturday, he ran it 20 times and threw it six, with backup Aaron Philo subbing in to throw 10 passes.

The game is three weeks down the road, but Tech’s renewed prowess at the point of attack could be bad news for a vulnerable Georgia team.

PFF rating system at the NFL level
100 to 90 is elite (their word, not mine)
89 to 85 as a pro bowler
84 to 70 is a starter
69 to 60 is a backup
59 down to zero is replaceable

Offense
2. LT Corey Robinson- 82.9 (32)
8. OL Harrison Moore- 72.4 (17)
9. RT Jordan Williams- 70.4 (64)
12. RG Keylan Rutledge- 63.9 (64)
17. LG Joe Fusile- 60.6 (46)
20. C Weston Franklin- 58.2 (64)

Defense
4. DT Thomas Gore- 69.4 (33)
6. DE Sylvain Yondjouen- 66.4 (33)
9. DT Zeek Biggers- 63.4 (37)
10. DT Jordan van den Berg- 60,9 (32)
12. DE Romello Height- 58.5 (41)
14. DT Makius Scott- 51.7 (26)

Overall, the OL played a good game. Fusile played his best game in a while, but still below par as a metrics game. It looks very much like the interior is where we need our strongest upgrade. If the tackle recruits start early, it's bc they are true high end players that are better than our current options.
On defense, the metrics don't show a great effort, but they delivered when needed the most. Once again, our interior needs the upgrade, but we are recruiting across the board to improve our front. High end producers have a real chance at playing time if they come to us.
The lines dictate outcomes. I think our future is bright, as we have good QBs in the queue, and good players want to play with good players.
Already waiting for Saturday.
Go Jackets!

I question these numbers. I thought the DL played very well last Saturday. Not sure what they're looking at.

Here are their numbers from Saturday. They are not overwhelming in themselves. However, what these don't show is pressures and how they occupied OL so the LB/DB could make plays. van den Berg had no stats, yet he recovered the decisive fumble and was a key part of hemming in Ward on that play.

Height: 2 tackles/ 2 solo/ 1 sack/ 1 TFL/
Harris: 1/ 1/ 0/ 0
Gore: 1/ 0/ .5/ .5
Yondjouen: 1/ 0/ 0/ 0
Scott: 1/ 0/ 0/ 0/
Robinson: 1/ 0/ 0/ 0
Biggers: 1/ 0/ 0/ 0

Agree. Key said in his post game that the DL played a lot of containment on Ward with the LB's making most of the tackles. Evidently the DL ratings were mainly based on numbers and not how well they executed the scheme. I would like to see the ratings from our coaching staff.
