I again am too young but ted roof was that good? I’ve always heard about the leaky roof defense.
You couldn’t play with more guts and intensity. He played sideline to sideline and was tireless at LB.

His only drawback is that he didn’t have the speed or size of a Ray Lewis. The rating services might have given him a low 3* if it was today; I don’t think NFL scouts even considered him, even though he made the All-America team.

If you were the opposing OC preparing to play us, during film study you’d start by spending five minutes talking about Roof and breaking him out on film. He had a way of being the fly in the ointment or the “monkey in the wrench”.

EDIT: Roof was on the Freshman All-America team in 1982 and All-ACC in 1985. His Wikipedia page has an error. We did have two All-America players in 1985, but Roof isn’t listed

Another thread gave me this idea. If you could assemble a starting lineup of Georgia Tech players from any time in the history, what would that lineup be? I’ll give it a shot, but since I haven’t been around long, my knowledge base of players is fairly small.

QB Joe Hamilton
HB Clint Castleberry
HB Joe Guyon
WR Calvin Johnson
WR BeyBey Thomas
TE Darren Waller (I’m cheating a bit here)
OT Bill Fincher
OG Shaq Mason
C Bill Curry
OG Rufus Guthrie
OT Walker Carpenter

DE Pat Swilling
DT Joe Anoa’i
DT Adam Gotsis
DE Marco Coleman
LB Maxie Baughan
LB Ted Roof
LB Lucius Sanford
CB Willie Clay
CB Najee Mustafaa
S Randy Rhino
S Ken Swilling

K Harrison Butker
P Pressley Harvin
Ah, the tyranny of Last Man Up. I am of the age I can remember Leon Hardeman, as tough a RB as ever graced the Flats. And tight ends Billy Martin and Ted Davis, who not only caught the ball but excelled in knocking one on his keister if he got in the way. As well as a guard, Dave Watson. But I won't argue with Maxie Baughan, the best of any generation. (And became one of the reasons Dodd began to falter as a coach: since he never graduated he brought back players ineligible to play but he gave them scholarship help ... and kept getting leaner in real players.)

Though Nesbitt hated to admit it, but Johnson's offense is the only offense he could QB. Otherwise he was a DB and probably s hoof one.
