Two backers went to same gap on their left side of the LOS. They were side by side. Maybe that is their assigned responsibility, I don't know. Sounds pretty weird to me. I watched the replay to see for myself mainly because the color guy said "bad gap control" on the broadcast. "That's what they'll be working on in practice on Monday," he added.

I don’t think it was their assigned responsibility but I do think the prior play set that up for the one LB to play too far to the outside because he was thinking about either Zach running it or trying to blow up the bubble screen to the opposite side as the prior play. So I don’t think he just went the wrong way in a vacuum (not saying that’s what you’re saying, either so please don’t take it that way). I feel it was the two different reads Zach made on the same alignment and play call for the RPO that has that LB confused.

I tend to believe the UNC guy who broke down the film in the video posted in this thread, It looked very clear the LB slid too wide on the play. There was an LB already in the gap he slid over to cover. Players have gap responsibilities. There are many times every game players don't fit their gaps properly. This play appeared to be one. No way to know why the LB didn't fill his gap. Just glad he didn't!

I just want to say something about the sudden and dramatic way this game was decided, from overtime looming to The End in about 6 seconds flat. Haynes proving yet again that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Right straight up the gut untouched to The House. Ran past them like they were statues or something. Man, that was a blur.

The OLB had contain to keep Jamal from getting outside which he did. MLB saw the play going inside and moved over to make the play and was destroyed by Rutledge.

Players screw up almost every play. That a player did on that play is unremarkable. Nor does it negate the exceptional blocking by our OL, nor does it negate the quality of the play call itself.

I already said we blocked the play extremely well and Haynes made his cut at the precise moment the hole opened. Hand the UNC player missed his gap. That happens all the time in College Football. That he missed his gap is not throwing shade on GT. You have no clue as to why he missed his gap, only speculation. He missed it and we took advantage of his mistake!

It’s a shame that there is not a video from the defensive line perspective. Not everyone can see the defensive players mucking it up at full speed. There are 4 defensive players on the left side of the defensive line that are doing nothing.
As Haynes clears the hole, those guys all turn around and basically watch him score. I mentioned this before and got trashed by the ”never wrong” crowd here. Again, hard to see at full speed

Both happen. I think few gently people DO push harder on the reason being only due to poor play by the opposition rather than anything we do having anything to do with it. The player absolutely missed his gap. Could have been he just forgot his assignment. Could have been he was thinking the ball was going to the WR on a screen. That’s all.

True, and it happens in reverse, too. Folks will attribute losses to bad play or play calling while ignoring the possibility that the other team played well. And I've been guilty of it, too.
We should all keep in mind that there are two teams on the field. We're not out there in a vacuum.

That's fine. My point is he missed his gap which was the key reason Haynes was able to be sprung for the long TD run. The reason the defender missed the gap is and will always be unknown. The blocking was excellent as was the running. Rare to get a 68 yard run in that situation. Really fun play to watch live and in slow motion replay with and without the detailed explanation the UNC insider provided.
