I hope y'all can get pass my country SC twang and come away with some understanding of our defense during this 1st series. Please leave your thoughts or any questions. Enjoy
First of all, I think you have to give a ton of props to Bud Foster. You may hate him, but you better respect him, because he had those kids ready to play a pretty complex scheme against us. Most teams line up with one base formation all game and just do a couple simple variations off that based on down and distance and our formation. Not BF and the VT defense. They did a little of everything and often mixed, from down to down, who had QB, who had pitch, and from a totally different look. It is obvious they wanted to confuse JT and our OL. Personally, I think the game ball (for either team) goes to #36 on VT's defense. He played better than anybody else on the field. Although we owned the action in the G-C-G area of the field, we just couldn't get a hat on that guy or take him to the ground pursuing to the edge. He single handedly kept our dive from blowing up on them and he single handedly allowed them to run some of the tactics they did in the flats. Without him, they are not...
This is a thread for folks to post things that stood out to them that helped win the game Saturday for the rest of us who might not have noticed. I have three in mind.
1.) DJ White pulled a brilliant and classic bait-and-switch on that VT QB on the last interception. The defense had given up that short out route all game long and the VT QB had been taking it all game long. You know that QB wanted to make the longer throw, but we were always playing it conservative and giving them the short one. Then the stakes were raised on the last drive and the VT QB wanted to make a bigger play down the field to make the game winning drive. And, DJ baited him right into it. He sat on the flat route like he was determined to finally stop that short route, and then the instant he saw the QB go into his windup, he took off in a backpedal toward the corner route, and it was a can of corn at that point. I marveled at that play. I am still wondering if that was all DJ's jedi-mind-game or if...
Film study sounds so much more impressive doesn't it? I wish I had real film though, so I could see what was happening away from the ball. Now that we all have huge screens and high def, I wish producers would make a commitment to go to a wider view of typical play coverage.
I just watched three fourths of our defensive series. Today, I didn't get caught up in formations, strategy, and tendencies etc. I just simply watched position groups and individuals to see how they were playing. My overall goal was to see if we had made gains and to get a general picture of where we are personnel-wise.
While I don't think BC gave a look into what pressure other teams may be able to put us under by spreading us out, they were generally very physical along the line and had a good RB. I'll bet their QB will give them a boost this year compared to recent years. With that said, I don't think there was a ton of playmaking ability all over the field. Most of their skill guys are serviceable, if I...

Tim Byerly #18 Quarterback
Q: How's practice going so far?
Tim Byerly #18 QB
A: It's been a good few days. We've been in shells and helmets for most of the time. It's been pretty productive so far. We should get a good look on Monday when everyone puts the pads on.
Q: How are you and Justin splitting snaps right now?
A: Justin is with the 1's. I'm with the 2's. Occasionally I'll go over with the 1's and Matthew Jordan will work with the 2's.
Q: What's it like working behind a healthy O-Line?
A: Oh man, it is awesome. We have a ton of depth there. Shaq and Trey Braun are really taking control and making sure the new guys know what they're doing. That helps Justin and I a lot. We feel way more comfortable going up to the line. We don't have to check a play to a better position outside since we're more...
ATLANTA, GA – Another spring is in the books and Yellow Jackets fans are characteristically confused.

We won! But we lost. Our defense got off the field on 3rd downs! What’s happened to our offense? Interception! Interception…
So it goes with spring games and today was no different. Highlights for either team ultimately led to the question – “Was that a good play, a bad play, or both?”
Here’s what we know. White defeated Gold by a final of 13-3. In an age of high powered offenses including Georgia Tech’s own, it’s safe to conclude the defense got the upper hand today. “It was pretty much a defensive struggle,” said Head Coach Paul Johnson.
Senior quarterback Justin Thomas led the Gold team to victory despite connecting on just 4 of 13 pass attempts. One of those completions, however, resulted in the day’s lone touchdown as Ricky Jeune hauled in a contested...

ATHENS, GA - There were moments, plural, all season long when they could have given up. There were moments, plural, on Saturday when they could have caved. Instead, the 2014 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-2, 6-2) looked adversity in the eye time and time again and fought their way to an undisputed 30-24 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in Sanford Stadium.

And there is no denying they earned it.
Saturday's battle between the Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs was the 109th edition of Clean, Old Fashioned Hate and included all the elements of an instant classic. The teams alternated scores throughout regulation, combined for three lost fumbles within two yards of the end zone, and continually delivered seemingly game-ending body blows. Georgia's...

Justin Thomas #5 Quarterback
Q: How was practice today?
Justin Thomas #5 QB
A: It was good. We got better than yesterday.
Q: Justin, what was your focus this offseason? Obviously it looks like you've gotten a little bigger; what else have you been working on in addition to that?
A: Like you said, I've been trying to get in the weight room to put some more weight on. Just working with guys [on the field] to make sure we're on the same page.
Q: What can you tell us about the offensive line so far?
A: First thing off the bat we have a lot of depth - more depth than we've had in a while. Right now we're really getting the young guys to know what they're doing.
Q: What are your personal goals this year?
A: Just to be successful. Go out there and play as hard as I can every game and try to come out on...
MIAMI GARDENS, FLA - In a game featuring the second highest ranked teams from two power five conferences, the SEC's Mississippi State Bulldogs (10-3, 6-2) were no match for the ACC's Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-3, 6-2) Wednesday night in south Florida. With only minutes to spare prior to the New Year, the Yellow Jackets capped their remarkable 2014 season with a convincing 49-34 victory and Orange Bowl trophy.
Georgia Tech celebrates the Orange Bowl victory against Mississippi State
Following Georgia Tech junior cornerback Chris Milton's interception on the game's opening series, the Yellow Jackets converted the early turnover into 7 points with just 2:22 of game time elapsed. The early score gave the Jackets a lead they would never relinquish.
For the entirety of the game Georgia Tech took what the Mississippi State defense gave them....

ATLANTA, GA - In life you're not always presented with second chances. For Marcus Allen and Jabari Hunt-Days, a second chance is what they needed and received. Both took advantage Friday night during Georgia Tech's spring game and left indelible marks in the minds of Yellow Jacket fans going into the offseason.

Allen, a running back turned linebacker turned wide receiver turned running back again, rushed for a team-high 77 yards and caught multiple passes out of the backfield with ease. On any ordinary night in college football that stat-line would certainly not earn an ESPN helmet sticker nor much more than a pat on the back. However considering Allen's spring, one in which he took over Georgia Tech's feature back position after practicing there just 7 days, those statistics are far more impressive.
Reflecting on the past week Allen complimented his coaches and...
