Thats a great start, doing something different is a good thing, maybe the next step is to not have him show up at all.

Sugiura: 5 notes from quarterbacks/B-backs coach Bryan Cook
Mills continues progress

One of the plays that got Cook most excited about B-back Dedrick Mills wasn’t even a carry, but a block that he threw on quarterback Justin Thomas’ second touchdown of the game, a four-yard run off a fake toss. Mills cleared space for Thomas, taking on linebacker Troy Stewart at the goal line near the left hashmark and driving him about five yards to the sideline.

“I was fired up by that, that he knew what to do because that was the first time that he ran that play and that he actually did a good job at it,” Cook said. “I was quite pleased.”

Cutcliffe press conference (23 min video)
  • As part of opening statement said "this is a really good Georgia Tech team. They're better than they've been."
  • Said GT offense is way better than Army both in terms of personnel and execution
  • Couple of compliments for our special teams
  • A reporter said Duke D has not allowed a 4th down conversion all year in context of asking about our O's propensity to go for it

RS Junior CB Bryon Fields (5 min video)
  • Said Duke was able to "put in a couple new calls with the extra time"
  • Said DBs are "looking in and reading the tackles" against our O

RS Freshman QB Daniel Jones (5 min video)
  • Said they focused on penalty discipline and ball security as much as anything else during bye week

I was at the Duke /UVA game. Duke threw at least 4 interceptions and fumbled in their end zone on a blind side tackle. UVA had downed the ball on the 1 foot line with little time left in the game so Duke tried to pass from their endzone with about 2 or 3 minutes left. Duke was hitting a lot of bubble screens, quick throws to the wide out, and a few slants. They did not test UVA deep except maybe a couple of times without success. UVA was having trouble getting pressure on those quick passes so they started jumping up at LOS and they knocked down at least 6 passes. Most of those occurred in the second half and was a really good coaching strategy. That was against a 6'-5" QB too. If we don't do something like that, they will dink us to death on short throws and will play ball control. I was not impressed by their running game at that game. Their QB broke tackles in the backfield when he should have been tackled for loss and made positive yardage. Our QB goes down with an arm tackle.

Here's the deal, imo, fwiw:
Duke's remaining schedule is GT, vpi, unc, pitt, d'oh U. I've gotta think that they see us as a must win for their bowl hopes as much as, if not more than, we see them as a must win. They need to win three of those five, and they're going to be underdogs in all of them, I reckon. We need to win 2 of Duke, unc, vpi, uva, u[sic]ga, and are likely favored in Duke, uva, and u[sic]ga. We really need to be ready for their best shot.

GT must see this as a must win for our bowl hopes to stay alive. I'm not concerned with how they view it. We need to win out. ala Jake Taylor from Major League.

I like the confidence us fans have about the last Saturday in November, but I really don't see us favored in Athens. They've struggled this year, but so have we. And there's always that mental issue we have playing the dwags.

Right now, we are favored by ESPN power and footballoutsiders stats. That's what I used as the basis for my post, not my confidence.
