Well, we’ve been told it’s something personal(-ish)

I’ve brought this up before, and I’ll leave it here, but I believe it ultimately comes down to the fact that some people respond differently to hard coaching than others.

Damon is old-school and if you play for him, you've got to be coachable. I'm hopeful that things work themselves out, but based on what I have heard, I'm not optimistic that he is coming back.

I agree Mr. C. The GTMBB site today says he is out for the past three games (15 days, about the time for finals grades) for personal reasons. Mutombo was out for personal reasons and I understand his with his father's death, but he stayed with the program and was ready when called upon. 10 games may have been enough to predict future outcomes.

I suspect it is an expectation management decision on either the player's or the coach's, or both, or even the academic standing. Doryan, with many college offers since his junior year and committing early his senior year to Colorado, he probably had high expectations in his first college year. After signing a letter of intent with Colorado, he and Coach Boyle made a mutual agreement that he be released from the LOI commitment. Then he signed a letter of intent with Tech. He have been reading the Tech recruiting tea leaves with Tech going after another 7 footer or bringing in Mutombo after he signed with Tech, He also likely expected to get more that an average of 18 minutes playing time and 4 points and 5 rebounds per game, shooting 33% from the field and 20% from the line. I think both coach and player expected more, or were led to believe there would be more. I do hope Doryan gets relief from his personal reasons.

As well, if he does come back, with Mutombo playing so well and Doryan not playing nor practicing with the team, he may be out of shape. His X site says he was most fit at 225 lbs, is listed in the roster at 240, and has a tendency to go to 277 if not in an intensive conditioning program. And the coach wants a fast breaking, agile, and mobile 5 players on the court at all times.

As junior in high school, moving down from 277 to 225 in two years and then he attracted big school offers. He is likely over 240 or more after the holidays. He will certainly need a personal commitment to fit back into the current style of play.

As far as expectations go, I don’t see how Doryan could have expected any more opportunities than he was getting. He was our starting center as a freshman and was getting significant playing time, despite not really producing at the level to justify the minutes. He had some good rebounding games, but his defense wasn’t that impactful, and his offensive impact was negligible. He was a freshman, so I wouldn’t judge too harshly, and I thought he had potential, but at the same time I would have wanted him to improve substantially going forward to be considered a valuable contributor. I have no idea what went on with him, but if the whispers are correct, I wouldn’t be surprised if he tapped out if and when the coaching intensity and expectations ramped up a bit.

I keep going back to the fact that he started and then was subbed out for Mutumbo in the Northwestern game and then never returned to the game. Then he was gone for personal reasons before the next game. That seems to me to be more than just a coincidence. Whether something was said or he wasn't interested in learning from the bench who knows. Then again maybe there is some personal reason for his absence but it does seem strange to not even being on the bench in street clothes. Does anyone know if he is still in school?

I was really hoping he was the missing piece. I was so envious of schools last year that had large mobile centers. Seemed like they all did well in the tournament, especially UConn and Alabama. Him not working out really made me have to recalibrate my expectations for the season.

Hope he’s ok.

CDS recently made these comments about Doryan in the AJC:

"Onwuchekwa (6 feet 11, 240 pounds), a freshman, has played in 10 games (started eight) and averaged 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 points. Onwuchekwa has not been with the team since playing less than eight minutes in a loss to Northwestern on Dec. 15.

“He’s still out for family things,” Stoudamire added. “He’s in compliance, all of that good stuff, but just waiting for things to clear up on that end. That’s kind of where we at.

Not sure how to interpret the comments but it 'seems' as though there may be a pathway for Doryan to come back.

I've heard from a couple of folks who are in the know who say that the chances of Doryan returning are slim and none, and word is that slim just left town.

To be honest, I read Damon's comments and felt the same way, but I was assured it was Damon doing the kid a solid by making it seem like something off the court.

Sounds he had a temper tantrum, took his ball and went home. If all that I've heard is true, I'm really disappointed in the kid.

There are people out there would kill for this type of opportunity, not to mention, he completely ****ed his teammates.

Too bad. I'll still hold out hope he makes it back. From afar, it seemed like he was developing. And, as you suggested, he had a clear role and opportunity here. Ah well...

Anyways, team seems to have come together since then. I know enough about life to know it's not 'because of' the kid's absence, but things started clicking almost right after.

Could have used his size tonight🤷🏻
Having watched all of his games this year it was apparent he needed some coaching. Sad thing is he has the tools to be an excellent player if he can just do the work and take the coaching.
