Defensive Consistency

1. CPJ spoke about different zone schemes Roof concocted that confused FSU.

2. The defense actually got pressure on FSU's QB.

3. After a first half that saw Cook go for 60+ yards the defense held him to under 80. Part of this is due to dubious play calling from Jimbo, but still.

4. Forced a Turnover

Where was this D? What were the scheme changes? Can we get this type of game next week and there beyond.

I don't think FSU's offense is the best in the world or anything, but I think they are better than Duke's, Pitt's, and at least as good as UNC's. It would have been nice to have this type of defensive effort against those teams because we would probably be 6-2 right now, with a chance to still win our division. Oh well, it didn't happen, but we could still win some really fun games over the next 4 and play in a decent bowl game. Hopefully we keep improving. Go Jackets!

Fwiw, before this weekend, unc was #6 off in ppd and #4 in ypp vs pwr.5 opps. ND, CU and FSU were all top 20 in those categories. So, yeah, noles better than Duke and Pitt, but I don't get the lack of respect for nc's off.

Let's just hope that Roof remembers this next year, so we don't have to go through the first half of the season again with lousy defense. Yesterday was PHENOMENAL !!!

That is the million dollar question, isn't it? Can we do it again?

I noticed Gotsis lining up on the other side of center than usual. Not sure what that was for, but if it helps, let's see more of it. Tackling was much better. GTL above and someone else in another thread made the good point that the combination of getting FSU off the field and our offense keeping the ball kept the defense fresh the whole game. I have seen this squad play good run defense before, so I could see them doing that. The thing that baffles me is how this same line managed to rush so much better. We have had serious trouble with lesser pass protection teams than Florida State. And yet without much blitzing we made Golson nervous on most pass plays.

Adam Gotsis was a wrecking crew. That is where most of our pass rush came from. We decided to take Cook away and see what FSU could do against us in the passing game. Got good pressure and had done very good coverage. Great defensive performance. Can they do it again? Without a doubt. Can they shut other teams down every game. Not even Bama does.

I think a lot of this goes to our offense keeping the d of the field, although we didn't score a lot we eat up a pretty good amount of the clock. It gave us more time to make adjustments throughout the game, and plenty of rest.

Football outsiders & ESPN both have them at #11 for offensive efficiency (FEI). Notre Dame is top 10 and UNC is #12. Clemson is top 25 and Pitt is not terribly far out either. (#33)

The biggest takeaway is that all of our hardest games are behind us. There are no more currently ranked teams on the schedule.

I'm gonna get killed for this but I think our D has been our team strength for the first half of the season. FSU was our best game by far. But the D played well enough for us to win most of our games. I think that's true for ND, Duke, and Pitt. Was true with UNC till Gotsis got ejected.

The D has been the team strength. But to say that the D played well enough to win most of our games is a bit of a stretch. It's an example of the bias that has plagued the fanbase in CPJ's tenure. His offense gets so much of the spotlight that the D is held to a totally different standard than the O. It's time for that to stop.

EDIT: Nevermind! Read that totally wrong, and I agree with your point! That's what I get for posting still half asleep...

Imo, this defense paired with just an average Paul Johnson offense from the past and we would probably only have one loss right now (Clemson). this years offense has been mostly putrid and has kept our defense on the field way more than normal. Sure they've scored 21 1st half points a couple of times but then turned around and done squat in the second half.

In another thread I mentioned seeing coach pelton at the gym and I honestly don't know what I was think, it was Moore. When I was speaking to him he said he has never seen the stadium as electric as it was on Saturday night. We talked about the d for a little and he told me this team is about to be very good over the next years, with how well our freshman have been playing I can see this for sure.

"Putrid"? I agree it has been below par but that is going too far. Now if you were to say our pass protection last night was often putrid, I would agree :)
