A thread on the updates surrounding the Georgia Tech head football coaching search (which will be continuously updated with new and relevant information as it pours in)

For now, an overview:

11/28: Paul Johnson reportedly retiring

11/28: The university announces Paul Johnson is stepping down

11/28: Early reports indicate that Georgia Tech is looking into Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliot as the next head coach

Update: Rivals insider Kelly Quinlan refutes the veracity of these reports

11/29: Temple head coach Geoff Collins and UAB head coach Bill Clark are connected to the Georgia Tech position per sources

(Edited and split up into multiple posts since each post can only handle 8 tweets at a time)

11/29: Per sources, Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is a front-runner for the position

Update: Per ESPN's Adam Rittenburg, Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliot could also be in the mix

Update: FootballScoop reports they are hearing Ken Whisenhunt as the favorite in the early stages, and some other names they are hearing include Tony Elliot and Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield. FootballScoop also mentions Troy head coach Neal Brown, Army head coach Jeff Monken, and Kennesaw State head coach Brian Bohannon as potential candidates who may get a look

Update: Ken Whisenhunt will reportedly interview this weekend for the head job

Per the AJC's Ken Sugiura, reports have also surfaced on two other candidates:
Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key are believed to have interest in succeeding Johnson.

Update: GTSwarm insider (alias) Yomanser refutes that Ken Whisenhunt will succeed Johnson as the next head coach:
For what it's worth - regarding Ken Whisenhunt - I spoke with a source close to the beginning stages of the search, and was told to not worry about anything materializing from the Ken Whisenhunt rumors. I can say with utmost confidence and near certainty that Ken Whisenhunt will not be the next head coach

11/30: UAB head coach Bill Clark signs an extension with UAB, potentially precluding him from the Georgia Tech job among others

12/3: After his interview with Ken Whisenhunt, Todd Stansbury is now on his way to New York to conduct this week's round of interviews for the position, per reports

In addition, the triple option seems to be on the way out, potentially preventing the hire of any option coach from the Paul Johnson tree

12/5 Update: Per reports, Georgia Tech's head coaching search is nowhere near complete, as Todd Stansbury will interview 5 or 6 more candidates, and also refutes rumors that Ken Whisenhunt has been offered the head job

Temple head coach Geoff Collins is also specifically mentioned as a candidate, and the search could potentially take up to another week and a half

Opening up the thread now that the head coaching hire has been made, but I will keep it updated with assistant coaching hires

Also, a side note: all things considered, this was a relatively quiet and tight-lipped coaching search. The way this coaching search was conducted is rare for this day and age, and all credit goes to Todd Stansbury for it. It only took a little over a week to hire the next head coach, which is about average for the industry. Anyone who says that this coaching search was dramatic or convoluted is exaggerating the process, which was run cleanly and smoothly
