Why isn't Dontae on Kickoff Return? What we have been missing for as long as I can remember on KR is consistently having someone with some acceleration. Acceleration gets us at least 5 extra yards every time and that's 5 yards we can always use. Dontae showed that last week. He should be continuing this this week. I don't want AB risk getting hurt. Juanyeh doesn't have acceleration
I liked your post but I must point out that Juanyeh has tons of acceleration. Remember his kick return against the Dawgs a few years back?

We missed some key blocks on kickoff return (in the past, @GTNavyNuke has put together a special teams review after games, and he would probably have some good info here). There were several times someone appeared to be completely unblocked on the way to the returner.
Maybe TO or Dontae would make that first guy miss, but we’d have a much better shot at a good return if we could get clean blocks at least on the first level of defenders.

It says here that Douse was added to the ATL. He actually played in the FSU game and was injured at one point. How did he play at FSU if he wasn't ATL? If he was ATL for FSU, how was he added to something he was already a part of?
ATL is a guide to start the game. As the game progresses the original ATL becomes fluid with the events of the game. Several players who are regulars on STs may not be on the ATL list. As injuries occur it is next man up, ATL or not.

I’d imagine he’d stick with 10. I think he was 10 in HS. Not everyone wants a single digit. In my opinion, numbers 1-25 are all highly coveted. Numbers like 10, 23, etc. are very popular. 21 at Tech is huge. When I was at Tech, my dad wanted me to try and get 18 because of Billy Lothridge.
I was #23 from the time I was 8 years old. Don't remember why, but that was 1977, long before Jordan first donned #23. I agree that the lower numbers are always the most coveted unless there is a personal reason for a higher number.

Douse probably would have been ATL if we knew Clayton was out when the chart was created.

Some guys don't play because of game situation. The first team OL was rolling and did not need a breather and the game was tight. Obviously Sims was leading the team -- no reason to pull him. ATL means ready to play at the level we need to be as competitive as possible. It doesn't mean will play.

Other than Douse, I believe all the non-ATL contributors were on special teams.
That doesn't make sense. You're either ATL or not ATL. As you aptly pointed out, just because you're ATL doesn't mean you play. Whether Clayton plays or not shouldn't affect whether Douse is ATL.

Oliver was fantastic on kickoff returns. I wish he’d get some tries.

No. We need to have adequate depth and will have people move into ATL when depth is needed. We saw that a lot last year with injury. If we have adequate depth for a game at a position, we won't move someone into an ATL spot just because of someone getting hurt.

I don't agree with this characterization. ATL means you're game-ready. You may play, you may not play, but you've demonstrated the ability to not be a liability on the field and capable of making plays. I think this is written somewhere, maybe even on the ATL release each week.

I don't think it's a fluid thing during a game. It is about O and D, so I agree it excludes ST (other than the specialists). I'd say in rare situations would there be sufficient injuries to warrant putting someone in the game that is not considered game-ready.

We have 4 corners above the line for two positions, and we have 4 nickels above the line for anywhere from 0-2 positions, depending on the defense. Maybe we have to be careful with our corners.

Perhaps for Randy Rhino who would've been 3 to 4 years earlier.

Jaunyeh has plenty of acceleration for kickoffs. In fact, I like him there. He picks the right hole he can take it to the house. He did last year. Just no dancing and no punt returns. Punt returns is where he gets little acceleration.

I agree. No AB and I'm surprised that Gibbs is listed for kick returns?

So basically ATL is meaningless, There’s no logical order to it- injured players show up on it, players who won’t play at all show up on it, and then others play who aren’t listed on it at all. It’s almost like it just exists to confuse everyone and create discussion.

To me it was night and day difference last Saturday. Dontae seemed to get to the 20 yd line quicker that Juanyeh did.

Is that any different than a normal depth chart where you don't want to disclose temporary injuries or where someone not on the depth chart has to play due to injuries?

Juanyeh was a true freshman all american kick returner in '18 per 247 sports. He was trying to set up a return and make a crease to break one when it just wasn't available, hence going backwards. He's not the quick burst guy but is plenty fast as he showed then. Don't know why he danced around trying to break one. Maybe that's an analytics decision, anticipating 10 yards lost vs. chance at big gain/TD.
