[QUOTE="RamblinCharger, post: 30947, member: 1005"] Cheese you're spot on, it's an award. I'm currently in college. I go to UAH, which is considered better academically than auburn or bama by some, but still a D2 school, but anyway, I digress. I pay around 5 thousand a semester, well my parents do thank goodness, and I know tech is more expensive than that (I'm going to talk about these numbers very conservatively) so lets say $6k a semester for an in state student. That's around 60 thousand dollars they're receiving over 4 just for housing not including books. Then, on top of that they get dining dollars, and they probably get the base amount every month, which is $225-250 every month for probably 9 months. These "dollars" can be used around many campuses to buy a number of things not exclusively food. So that is another $6-8k just so they can eat. Then, they get clothing, shoes, and other team merchandise to wear around or work out in. That is probably a $3k value during their career at least. Last but not least they get free housing. Athletes usually get the nicest dorms or some of the nicest dorms on campus, which are roughly a $5k value per year for 9 months, so another $20k for 4 years. So at most schools a student athlete receiving a full scholarship receives $90-100k worth of goods, that I and my parents and many other students around the country are paying for. I for one also think they should receive a stipend for gas/spending money at or around $250-300 a month, because they most likely can not work, but that is a different subject. Their scholarships and benefits are most definitely an award. They have worked hard and have talent that I do not have, but if I had the talent and had spent the time playing ball in high school past freshman year I would love the opportunity that many of them have. There is no reason for these guys at NW, (who btw are receiving a fantastic education that costs more than the average amount to go to school there), should be complaining about what they get or threatening to start a union, it's absurd.
