could we give the gt athletic department a complete make over using what we are learning from coach collins?

would it be disingenuous to use the 404 gimmick and the other stuff coach collins has introduced for basketball baseball track golf etc

id love to see a picture of collins giving coach pastner a 404 t shirt and hat in a symbolic gesture of gt dominance in the atlanta area etc

probably stretching that gimmick too thin?

what do you think?

I think it’s branding. If the message is that our football team owns or represents ATL then sure it could translate to Tech itself represents the ATL. Matter of fact it’s long overdue. Can’t get people in South Georgia to stop looking at Georgie as the school representing the state if we can’t even lay claim on the city we are in

For that to happen, you would have to get all of the other teams to buy in. At that point I think it would be more watered down down that what it already is, and people would think it’s more cheesy that what it already is too. I do think Tech needs a complete overhaul of its marketing department. But we’ve kind of known that for decades now. They should really be trying to expand into the metro population, and get some retail items in places like Walmart, Target, Dollar General, ****’s, Academy, etc. to gain some exposure for the common fan.

It’s pretty much a joke at this point that the baseball team is ranked 6th in the nation, looking to host an regional and super regional, and the golf team is heading to the National Championship tournament. While the general Tech fan base and media department is pretty much indifferent to it. There is no excitement in Tech athletics right now. The teams and school’s y’all want to compete with and compare to? They destroy Tech’s fan base. Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, Miami, Vandy, UNC, etc. pretty much double Tech’s attendance figures. It’s embarrassing to go to a baseball game and see it only 1/4 full. All I can say is, come postseason time for baseball, kickoff for football, and tip-off for basketball, I want to see the Rusty C, BDS, and McCamish loud and full of people wearing white, gold, yellow, navy, black, or gray, as long as they’re rooting for Tech.

I agree. In fact, if memory serves, when CJP first came here he talked about recruiting Atlanta, using the hip-hop culture tie-in, and all that. His pitch just never gained traction, or hasn’t so far.

Gotta crawl before we walk or run. If the football team wins the attitude will prove contagious. I remember when a few of those programs you mentioned were far from power houses.

I think Patsner should walk over to Collins office and ditto everything he doing.

so do i. And the guy leading the way should be our ad. he should be the guy that makes the final decision on how far to take the branding. after all .... he will be the guy most intimate with the end results.

gt should be an endgame for any fb player .... bb player.... in the 404. if gt can have great success in our two top revenue producing sports i see no reason why it cant 'trickle' on down to the rest of the teams. male and female.

t stan seems to be making the right moves imo. no doubt he is on top of this.

I understand that to a certain extent. But having a football program that hasn’t consistently won for the past few years shouldn’t stop fans from supporting the teams that are good. Especially when for Tech, those years can be few and far between. With the exception of UGA and Clemson on my list, none of those teams have been “powerhouses” for the last decade. But Duke and UNC are rabid about basketball; Vandy, and Miami are both consistently in the top % of baseball attendance. Places like Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St, Louisville that are essentially in the same boat as Tech when it comes to national prominence in football all still support their other teams when they are in the spotlight. Louisville probably had as many fans in McCamish as Tech did for their basketball game this year. Tech fans always want to whine and complain, but never actually do anything to support their programs.

With the baseball team expecting a large draft class this year, it could be the last time for a number years any of the “Big 3” sports have a chance to win a championship. Why people don’t want to support that team solely because the football team has been bad recently is beyond me.

I think we are making inroads, with CGC leading the way. Kids are now beginning to see GT as a cool place. We are seeing some really good basketball players want to “come back” to Atlanta.

Pastner would come off as fake trying to copy CGC's swag and marketing stuff, in my opinion. He can maybe piggyback off of it to some extent, but he needs to find his own way.

Collins sells the school and the city of Atlanta. Couldn't hurt to bring big time BB players for an introduction and quick pitch for the school. I would hope the coaches are willing to help each other out when possible. It makes for a better athletic environment when all sports are successful.

The ground work has been done in terms of PR only thing left to do is winning on Game day. If the wins follow then I think you could see more from other sports. If we don’t see an increase in wins then I don’t think it will be picked up by other sports.

As Bobby Dodd said, paraphrasing, "If you didn't have a ticket to a Tech game in Atlanta you just weren't in with the In Crowd."

To be fair, the city of Atlanta didn't have the Falcons, Hawks, Braves, or Atlanta United as competing sports options when he said that. That said, the "Thriller Dome" was alive during much of that period. Not saying we can't get a lot of that audience back, but it ain't 1960 anymore.

Atlanta United was a huge marketing opportunity missed, in our stadium, a championship, national attention --all we got is rent money and a thanks.

it should be all over he world Atlanta United and Ga Tech not one sentence without Tech following Atlanta United !

Not sure how trying tech football brand to MLS soccer is a great opportunity. They play to very different demographics.

GTAA could've given ticket discounts or specials to the United season ticket holders, Supporters Groups, and for United game stubs. Maybe they did this and I missed it?

Tons of United fans that are millennials that grew up in the Metro Atl plus transplants would have been a great demographic for GT to target, imo, while United played home games at BDS.

Actually, I think GT can STILL target United fans. Bobby Dodd will always be a part of United lore and the original United fans, especially those that packed out BDS for those first United games, absolutely adore the experience. Many of them wish the United still played there. Even for myself, being at one of those games, the experience and memories are legendary. Maybe its bc I've loved GT since birth, but my United experience at BDS versus MBS is on another level.
