The ACC’s problem this year is that one of the top two teams will lose their last game and nobody else is good enough to leapfrog them. Miami could maybe sneak in if they lose a barnburner to SMU but that seems like the only path to 2 teams.

And follow it up with a stupid onside kick execution. Even if they'd recovered it, they committed blocking penalties that would've negated it even on replay (per the broadcast).

And it's all moot since they gave up a house call for a TD. What a night for Dabo.
I love that for him!

I’ll go ahead and answer affirmatively. Someone will be along to correct me if I’m wrong
I think with the elimination of divisions and no way to have remotely equal schedules, the polls control. It’s the top two by rank, regardless of their conference record.

ETA

Found this. It sounds way more complicated than my current mindset can decipher. I could be convinced I’m wrong about something… but not another drink. That’s not wrong… ever… until tomorrow.

I found the attached on the ACC web site. No date on the form, but I believe this is current. Gives two versions with a two-way tie and a three-way or more tie. Gets pretty complicated with 6 steps for a 2 way tie or 7 steps for a 3 way or more tie.

The final option for both scenarios is a drawing administered by the Commissioner.

Clemson may have lost more than a game against UL. They have to somehow get into and win the ACC championship to get into the playoff. Two ugly losses. Did you guys see how many missed tackles they had in their secondary. That running game back was awesome in space and fast.

UL is also a common opponent of front-runners Miami and SMU, in case either of those teams ends up with an ACC loss. So Clemson needs a lot of help to get to the ACC championship.

The odds are long. Their four remaining games are VT, Pitt, Citadel, and South Carolina. Only VT and Pitt count, but Pitt is good.

SMU has BC, UVA, and Cal.

Miami has us, Wake, and Cuse.

SMU is interesting to watch. They can absolutely buy a championship program - they did it before and got their program killed for it. Now it’s legal, and they’re at it again. They will be a force to deal with.

As a stepping-stone, they essentially bought their way into the P4 by agreeing to a no-revenue sharing deal for 9 years. Not many schools can do that.

I was surprised at how well they have done in their first year of ACC competition, but Rhett Lashlee is a good coach and has been recruiting well. I looked at their talent composite and saw that it's already 5th in the league, behind only Clemson, FSU, Miami, and UNC, and head-and-shoulders above anyone else in their former conference. They sit at 13th in the AP poll, and they have a real shot at getting into the playoffs this year.

You’re not wrong…. But Short of winning out and being ACC Champ, they’ll probably struggle to get in the playoff (right or wrong).
If they win until the ACCCG and lose to Miami, they would really get a huge lift by BYU being undefeated B12 champ. 11-2 with their only losses to two undefeated conf champs would be compelling, but they’d be up against two-loss SEC and BIG teams that would presumably have more compelling wins.
If BYU loses and drops out of CFP, I don’t see a path for SMU short of winning out.

Anyone who believes the ACC will get more than 1 team in the playoff are simply being purposely obtuse. The fix has been since the fake negotiations for the negotiations. The winner of the ACCCG will get in and that’s it. Eventually the BIG and SEC will once again play Phillips and get him to agree to do away with auto qualifiers. It will be funny to watch his press conference. Oh, yeah, he doesn’t do those, he just hides like he did last year.

They have speed to burn, In the Pitt game some smu back ran the along sideline and FOUR!! different guys tried to push him OOB and missed. They just mis- read his speed.Scary.
They have oil money to buy a team. hmm
btw-in Lville/clem game they saidI think that Lville had 40 transfers and clem had 5. Go buy what you need.

After we beat Miami, SMU will be the favorite to win the ACC.
Yup… but they’ll still have to do it.
FWIW, SMU win over Pitt is probably a better win than any Miami has. SMU just had the unfortunate luck of catching a top 10 team early.
However, SMU has a major stumbling block in front of them with BC this week and Cal to close the season. Both teams have played to their level of competition (good and bad) every week. Neither is an easy out and both will likely be one score games late.
I wouldn’t be shocked if the presumed ACCCG matchup has another major shake up.

SMU had one of the easiest rated schedules at the beginning of the season. They have performed better than most expected. The FSU pundits who want to fire Norvell have already started circling the SMU coach. I don't think they can buy Norvell out with such a huge contract this year. Norvell will be forced to make coaching changes and his recruiting is in the dumpster this year.

I couldn't find anything with Andy Dufresne talking about the ACC, so we'll stick with the obtuse reference.......

Yeah… although preseason had pretty much nothing to do with reality this year. FSU might be the only thing worse than the pundits this year.

Credit to SMU for beating teams that were put in front of them and not worrying about the “experts!” :D

I also agree Norvell goes nowhere this year. It’s a bad year to be an assistant coach in Tally. Hopefully Mike stays the hell away from our staff… I like what we’ve got working here!

Why would any coach want to leave GT to go to F$U after this season? I don’t think even Wienke would do that right now.
