20 years of “modern” Bobby Dodd Stadium

20 years ago the north end zone upper deck was added and seating was put back in the south end for the first time since 1985. Setting the capacity of BDS to 55K and creating the configuration we have now at the flats. Looking back, what are your favorite moments, memories, and stories of the project, and the stadium since then? Do you like how the flats are now or do you miss the old days? I was born in 2006, so the current state of the stadium is all I’ve ever known.

I've only seen pictures of the old horseshoe, and i do wish that they had kept it and built the building on the north end and added seating all around it. I just love how right on top of the action we are. Friends I bring to games always remark how close they feel to the action.

The new configuration is horrible in my opinion. First, we didn’t need the additional seating that they added at the last minute to the upper north. Second, it looks horrible. You would think we would be able to hire a decent architect to make our stadium look good and attractive. The Upper North stands look like a throw in, which is exactly what they are. I wish we had a better layout. Finally, we took on a huge amount of debt, $200 million?, that I’m not exactly sure how we are going to pay back. All in all, not a good situation.

I went to Neyland last week for a game and it was quite a show as they dedicated putting the old VOL signs back up. They had taken them down to "modernize" and fans loved seeing them go back up and light up. Being modern is one thing, but tradition matters too.

I know. Not very symmetrical. But keep in mind that they had to fit it into the Edge building as well. Personally I think it’s okay, but definitely could be better.

Yeah, one thing I do like about the wacky shape is that we have something unique.

I took my wife, then girlfriend, to her first Tech game against UVA in 2006 and we sat in the upper North stands. Calvin Johnson caught 2 TD’s that night and had 165 yards in receiving. My wife probably remembers the game mainly because the Atlanta skyline at night from the upper North stands at BDS is fantastic.

Unfortunately, the north stands seem to get used the most by fans of the opposing team (mutt fans). I will be at the game against Ole Miss and I wonder if Tech fans will outnumber Ole Miss fans in the upper North.

I'd say upper north. Reminds me of one of the times some friends and I ate some...chocolates...and snuck into the stadium at night and watched the sun come up while sitting at the tippy top of the upper north. Great view

I sit in the upper north, but my seats are on the first row above the concourse, so the view is somewhat limited. Ironically, the worse the seats, the better the view of the city, especially for night games.

My assumption is that the ROI for that addition is well into the negative.
BDS is not symmetrical and that’s ok, so that doesn’t bother me.
The views of the city from the top are pretty amazing from the couple of times I’ve been up there. I imagine the Wake Forest flyover was even more fantastic. Lol

I was at an alumni meeting years ago when Homer Rice was speaking. He first asked if there were any ajc people there and when the answer was no; he stated that the south endzone seating was condemned and had to be torn down.

in 90 gt was national champs
Too bad we couldn't put a stadium on west side of campus as our part of Olympics in 1996.

That could have been designed w parking and use for soccer.


( Baylor 45,000 all chair back seat stadium cost 250 m in 2013. The georgia dome cost 200m in 1990. i am not sure how we got in debt 200m working on bds)
As to your thread - first game wife and I attended was VT 2009. We sat in Frigid north stands . We loved the view of atl, the YELLOW -JACKETS, and the tearing down of the goal posts.

I have a wooden seat section cut out of the south end zone mounted on my family room wall. Given to me by a close family friend who was a true Tech man and given to him when they tore down the horseshoe. I also ran PE track on the cinder track around Grant field in the fall of 1964.
