Yes. ESPN refused to develop it without one.

Just the opposite. We, ESPN, will pay X for rights. Great! But we want our own network. “That’s expensive. We aren’t crazy about that. What if we build it and the conference dissolves?“ We’ll tie them up with a GOR. Just like everyone but the SEC. “Ok”.

    Conference Realignment

That is not my understanding. My understanding is that the ACC is authorized to make a deal with ESPN or any other media partner. The concern was that ESPN wasn‘t crazy about the ACCN and questioned its viability as well as the future of the ACC itself. So the GOR ensures that no one leaves...

GTAA realizes about $500K a year in investment income. It’s permanent endowment contributions are about $2.5M. The auditors stated “The Association’s financial outlook is positive based on anticipated revenue growth from the conference, fundraising existing revenue, and external partnerships...

Charles Barkley last night said that he was very concerned about the future of college sports. Paraphrasing, "If it continues the way it is going, five teams will control all of college sports." It is insane to compare Georgia Southern to Ohio State. The governing body (NCAA or whoever replaces...

“Back in 2016, the ACC and ESPN agreed to a 20-year media rights deal through 2035-36, a deal that brought about the birth of the ACC Network — owned and operated by ESPN — which launched in 2019. At the same time, the ACC extended its grant of rights deal nine additional years, taking that...

If FSU and Clemson bolts, the ACC would be the easiest path for Notre Dame into the CFP. We're adding 2 of their preferred opponents (Stanford and Cal) already ... renegotiate the media rights then and it might be interesting.

    College football is a mess

That depends. At Tennessee, the Athletic Department is part of the school directly ... there is no AA. It's the same at Notre Dame. The schools typically waive out of state tuition fees as a form of support .. at least in Georgia.

I'm not as optimistic as you. If the ACC breaks up and Tech sees reduced media payments... we will be stuck like Chuck.

    Conference Realignment

Sorry, it it’s NOT ok. It has been the major Albatross around GTAA’s neck for decades. It’s one reason we have so little maneuvering room. You can’t hire if you have so little cash to spare.

I don’t worry at all. I’m not the one with the debt. But we will see. In 40 years, I have never seen the GTAA attempt to address its debt other than to grow it.

    Conference Realignment

Really? Try to pay off $250M in debt with lower value media rights.

    Conference Realignment

The world won’t end, but it will have serious consequences for cash flow when the media rights are renewed.

In addition to time and network, viewership is a function of game quality (Alabama v Chattanooga?), and the quality of alternative games airing at the same time.
