It should be further noted that if you just go on a totals basis, ,the "top 10" teams in terms of fewest possessions include Army, Navy, Air Force, and Georgia Tech. That seems pretty clear evidence that the offense does, in fact, chew up the clock over the course of the season.

That's actually EXACTLY the argument I'm going to use, and I'm going to back it up with facts. Georgia Tech had the 25th fewest possessions of any team in the country. Georgia Tech had the 58th fewest touchdowns of any team in the country. Now, you may not want to believe that the option eats...
