  1. Coincidence for those in the know?

That’s essentially the Chan Gailey era, except he got past 7 wins just once. The reality is that expectations rise. 9-4 with a win over uga would be acceptable for a few years, then the expectation would rise to 10 wins. If after a few more years 10 wins wasn’t being reached, there would be...
  2. Roster Transition

I think the new offense will be a spread. Whether it is spread to run or spread to pass remains to be seen, though spread to run would be logical path. Also, RPO seems to be new weapon of choice and I think the AB’s would be very good as the receiving option in an RPO.
  3. Collins Fingerpoint Watch

Jets are nice, but a ballsy pilot could land a prop on the track around the football field. Maybe not as exciting as helicoptering in, but the helicopter entrance is not original any more.
  4. More GT Alums hired as quality control specialist

My understanding is that NCAA rules forbid it because you have to be one of the 10 coaches or four GA’s to coach players.
  5. Collins - Expectations and time to get things right?

In his last few interviews CPJ kept scoffing at the idea that the players would struggle to fit into the schemes. His opinion was that these guys are football players. He also said that nine of them spent their high school football careers doing what they did in his offense. He was also...
  6. Recruiting vs Coaching

I think CGC is a good X/O’s defensive coach. The question is can he get the players needed for his scheme. I wonder if that is what hurt Roof - if his scheme needed players that he wasn’t able to get enough of. Recruiting by CGC remains to be seen since there is limited history because he...
  7. “D & ST”

That’s a classic saying, but I do wonder if it is true anymore. I think when push comes to shove nowadays, you want a high powered offense instead of a great defense. That said, the still has defense has to be decent. A lousy defense can be scored upon every time, but even he best of offenses...
  8. “D & ST”

While I think CGC can coach and recruit, it’s hard to be sure since he’s bounced around so much. He’s a bit like Ted Roof in that respect. You had your suspicions one way or the other about his abilities, but just couldn’t be sure because he was never in one spot long enough. It’s not worth...
  9. CGC just a short note

And tomorrow and the day after, technically speaking. It’s a three-day long signing period. I concede that it appears that, as a practical matter, everyone signs on day 1.
  10. McCollum

I’m surprised not one assistant coach is being retained, but I can understand it. If Collins feels that he needs a new staff altogether, then you have to let him do it. CPJ was loyal to his assistant coaches, perhaps to a fault (well, the DC’s had a rough go of it, but that’s a different story).
  11. CGC on 680 this AM

Early signing is 12/19 - 12/21. Its a three day long window.
  12. The cold hard facts of GT Offense, Defense, Head Coaches

I think what is more to the point about Gailey is everyone lost confidence that he would ever be able to win a championship. He did four straight seasons of 7-5 or 7-6, gave a ray of hope of in 2006 where he went 9-5, and then returned to 7-5 the next season and the hope was gone.
  13. How Good Was Coach Johnson at Tech?

Yeah, he said something along those lines. What is missing, as usual, is the context. As I recall, the context was about CPJ's record and accomplishments while the head coach of GT. He wasn't calling the program mediocre. He was saying that relative to GT's football history he felt that he...
  14. Are you pleased with the hire (poll)

While not said, a possible reason for a 7 year contract is to compensate for the lower annual salary. That does presume you believe Collins should be paid about $3.8M/yr if he was in a five year contract. (Assuming the actual contract salary is $2.75M/yr). I'm not concerned about the length...
  15. Are you pleased with the hire (poll)

From what bit of research I've done (20 min of google plus the presser), it appears that Collins is a competent defensive coach and that he will make recruiting priority 1, 2, and 3. I really liked that he is appears to be going whole hog with all the recruiting angles (e.g., GT prepares for...
  16. If Collins is new HC, how many games in before...

Agree. Part of me wants to use all of those narratives against the new offense. Fail to convert a 3-and-long? We need a new offense, this one doesn't work on 3-and-long either! Lose a game when trailing the 4th quarter? We need a new offense, this one can't win from behind either! Have a...
  17. How much rebuilding are you willing to tolerate?

I honestly believe that a substantial portion of fans were embarrassed by GT running the triple option. They would rather go 7-6 running a classic offense than win an Orange Bowl with the triple option. Winning isn't enough, apparently. You have to win using the right kind of offense, with...
  18. If hired who will Whissenhunt get as his O.C.? D.C.?

I see a pro-style offense as being an offense that has a small number of base plays, perhaps only a dozen, and the rest of playbook is built weekly and is tailored for that week's opponent. Also, a pro-style offense generally wants to be very balanced, with equal ability to run between the...
  19. How much rebuilding are you willing to tolerate?

If Gailey 2007 team had the 2018 defense, the he doesn't win 7 games either. The new coach, provided he doesn't change the scheme or staff, should have an improved version of the 2018 defense. Regarding the offense, I guess I've more confidence than most people that the players can learn and...
  20. Question for you legal minded folks

In the past, they have posted position specific job openings. I'm surprised that one does not say head football coach, or something to that effect. Perhaps the rules (or interpretations have changed) so this generic posting meets the requirements to advertise the position.
