Not having CT is my biggest worry for tomorrow. Both times almost immediately after he went out our defensive performance deteriorated and the first half against WCU wasn't very pretty either.
A couple of thoughts.
First, GT did not go cheap on the Collins hire.
He was the highest paid FB coach GT has ever had and when he was hired his salary was in the top half of the ACC. We've gone cheap on basketball hires but not FB.
He was also given more resources and support than any previous...
New week, new column.
GT still on it.
GA St is currently just one of 3 teams in FBS that is still winless (Col and Col ST). Alot of not good football in ATL...
I will say one thing I don't care about at all is the new coaches contacts in the South.
When I look at the coaches who have built stable, winning programs in the ACC at schools that are not the more factory type schools (FSU, Clemson, Miami) - - I would place Clawson, Narduzzi and Doreen at...
FWIW, I don't really have any big preference for our next HC. I just want someone that can build a program that develops the players to their potential and is good on gameday.
It that's Deion - Great. If that Chadwell, great. If it is someone else, great.
I'm going to support whoever they hire...
I'll give you some idea from a former GT asst coach - this goes back to the early 2000's and my belief is that this has not changed for the better since then.
This coach said they would have a database of HS sophomores that they would be interested in. After they would receive their first...
Some of my current thoughts.
Collins failure was twofold - first he truly believed he could recruit his way to success at GT above all else, second he and his staff were probably the worst i've ever seen at GT at player development and gameday coaching.
If your definition of wins is competing...
The other issue is that hiring a HC is more difficult if you don't already have the AD in place.
The AD is the HC's boss. Not many people want to walk into a situation where they do not know who their boss is and how that relationship is going to work.
GT's ceiling may be higher, but is it higher enough to make a change from what is now a well-built and stable program? I doubt it. Our ceiling may be one more win a year at most.
After you take that time to build a winning program would you leave to try to do it again, or would you continue to...
Just to give some sense of where the market is.
I'm not going to include Miami since they had a booster willing to really lay out the big bucks.
But both UVA and VT made hires this past season. Both hired coordinators from well-known programs.
For Tony Elliott at UVA, his initial salary is...
This is one thing that has bothered me for a little while and that hasn't changed.
It feels like the big donors are throwing TStan under the bus in order to put distance between themselves and the Collins hiring.
Collins was one of the guys the big donors were willing to give more money for...
I don't get what is happening with the punt team at all.
Last year the same punter had 62 punts with 1 blocked.
This year he already has 4 blocked on 26 punt attempts.
That suggests an issue much larger than the punter.
That is going to make the fanbase that is still paying attention very unhappy. If anybody was thinking that firing the HC might improve the mood or juice ticket sales at all, that will kill it.
Unfortunately this is a very accurate statement.
Getting the right coach is very important. I don't expect that to necessarily be the 'big name' coach. I doubt 'big name' coaches will consider GT.
GT is arguably in a worse place now than when CPJ retired. There will be significant turnover no...
It doesn't mean that recruiting isn't important - but what it does mean to me is that I wouldn't put it above the other 2 legs on the stool. Collins pitch seemed to be largely centered on recruiting above all else - I also had concerns about that when he was hired but was more than willing to...
If we are hiring a coach primarily on 'recruiting prowess' that is a huge mistake. That is what got us into this mess in the first place.
GT football will never succeed by being a top recruiting school. In 40+ years I can count the number of Top 25 classes we have had on one hand. We are mostly...
IMO if CGC gets to 6 wins, he will not be fired.
I don't think he will get there, but if he does I just don't see GT pulling the plug.
I don't think you are going to get a big name coach to come here - they know the strengths and weaknesses of GT and are unlikely to stake their careers on a...
