XFL and other pro leagues are 2nd tier to the NFL but still better quality players on the whole than college, yet college is more popular. It's not because of the players, it's because of the colleges.
If/when college football goes to a 2 conference league, I bet it will die a slow death...
That was my guess too after the Tillman and Thacker news. To me that only makes sense if you aren't cleaning house (which a new DC would).

You don't have to publicly demote someone to let them know they are not being retained, it could have just been a private conversation. It seems more like external messaging where we're trying to use the time between now and our bowl game to get a head start on finding their replacements.

I don't think a structure like that would make much of a difference. You can't structure it to require the player to stay, and it doesn't prevent other teams from outbidding. No player would flinch at giving up $200k to make $250k somewhere else (unless they really wanted to stay for other reasons).
