    Conference Realignment

Why wouldn’t they? They’re a dominant conference (in market size). The ACC isn’t. In four weeks, the SEC will have 7 teams in the running for the playoffs. The ACC will have 2, maybe. They could have none If there’s a couple of upsets. By October, there‘s going to be a lot more people watching...

    Conference Realignment

What, exactly, do you want the ACC leadership to promote? Do you expect the college football universe to suddenly change 100 years of habit and start demanding a new product? It‘s an established fact. Other than FSU and Clemson, virtually the entire rest of the conference are smaller schools...

Georgia Tech versus Florida State. Seminoles coach Mike Norvell leads a tribe of airborne natives into Ireland to feast on some mean spirited Yellow Jackets. But as any Florida State swamper will tell you, a Seminole can cut to you to ribbons if they have arrows in their quiver. This year...

I didn't mean to imply that. Let's just say that the style of play in each league is different.

    Conference Realignment

True, but ... I just looked at the Week 4 expectations. The SEC will have 7 ranked teams that are most likely 3-0 heading into "match-ups" that are worth something (e.g., Alabama vs. Georgia). The ACC will have 2 ranked teams that are 3-0. That's the situation. The ACC has to do a better job...

    Conference Realignment

Paraphrasing Mark Twain, "reports of my death (of the ACC) are greatly exaggerated." As I mentioned before, you can't just talk about the ACC in isolation. It is the path, perhaps the only path, for Notre Dame to remain relevant. ND wins 80% of its games vs ACC opponents. As long as that is...

Oklahoma, with the storied history and resources that it has, hasn't won a national championship since 2000 - 24 years. Urban Meyer recently said they are about to experience significantly more physicality than what they are used to. Yep ... more challenging. According to Meyer, the biggest...

    Conference Realignment

It will never go away. The best description of SEC bias is the preseason ranking. This year, there are 9 teams in the top 25. In a few weeks, 7 or 8 of these teams will start their season 3-0 and be ranked in the Top 15. Now, once SEC conference games get underway, these become “ranked...

Probably one of the more enjoyable aspects of Tech football in the 1980s was winning and … waiting until Sunday to read the print edition of the AJC and Furman’s take. Fraternity brothers would fight over the Sports section of the paper.

Agreed. And I really don’t have a problem with the top 30-40 TEAMS breaking away to form a new league. But the current arrangement is for two conferences to get supersized money at the expense of the others. That’s counterproductive. A missed opportunity to make it better for everyone.

Meh. The AJC is striving for 500,000 digital subscribers by 2026 and has a new strategy ”to “super-serve” specific audiences in Atlanta” to get there. The NY Times playbook. Every media company has an agenda.

    Conference Realignment

It’s always been that way. Home game generates more for the home team than the visitor. Visiting teams negotiate different fees based on the draw. Nothing new about that. Conferences, however, doing so simply concentrates value in a smaller group. It skews the results long-term. My argument...

    Conference Realignment

No. The potential market remains the same or even growing with population. There are two issues … content and distribution. ESPN owns content but its distribution is at risk. So currently, it’s addressing that by higher carriage fees and higher advertising. But distribution is distribution to...

ESPN made $2.4 billion on $17 billion in revenue. It has many moving parts including ESPN International Star (India) … both of whom declined offset by stronger domestic ESPN. ESPN maintained ad revenue despite its battle Comcast. There are many programming units that ESPN may want partners for...

True, but there’s not an unlimited number of broadcast slots. That’s one reason that ESPN said no to a 9th SEC conference game. Funny, CBS had the SEC game of the week for years and I dont recall similar comments about them. Broadcasters go after the content most favorable to their model.

During a recession, men tend to stay home more (unemployed). Sales of snacks (especially chips like Fritos, Doritos, etc) and beer go up as they tend to watch more sports. The ACCN makes $140 million a year for ESPN at very low risk. Why walk away from that? Not only that, keeping the ACC...
