I think a number of posters are correct that talent is largely a tier issue.
Most teams that GT plays are going to be close enough in talent that you are not going to win simply by throwing more talent on the field. Player development and in-game coaching are going to become the difference...
Here's another theory. Maybe he has had an undisclosed injury or sickness that has largely kept him out of games.
I think that was even mentioned in one of the last couple of games by the announcing crew that he was working his way back from injury.
I'm not sure I would take alot of good defense out of the Miami game.
We gave up a ton of yards, but not alot of points (which is good). That is due primarily to the TO's. (Which also allowed us to score most of the points we did).
But we only forced 3 punts on 12 possessions. Miami had 5 drives...
We are +7 in TO margin in our 2 FBS wins. -6 in our our 4 losses.
I don't expect us to win any game where we have a negative TO margin.
I said going into the BC game I would be watching 2 things. Could we keep Castellanos in check (no), and how would the TO battle play out (not in our favor)...
I just don't see any real movement between the power conferences for the next couple of years because I don't believe the money is there to pay teams to do it.
No one moving has gotten more than $30M per year over the last year.
If anyone truly wanted to leave right now I don't really think...
2 things.
First, he didn't show the one category where the D ranked high, DTO (% of opponent drives that end in an INT or fumble) .167 (rank 13th - which matches our national ranking in TO forced). That's basically the Wake and Miami games with their 5 TO in both games.
Second, the metrics he is...
Clemson, right now they have a QB that was super highly decorated, but has had TO issues.
A WR group that doesn't appear to have much in the way of difference makers.
an OL that is not very good at run or pass blocking.
When you look at the stats - both overall and conference-only, Clemson's...
What's truly awful is that I have had this exact thought.
We have really owned UNC, so hopefully that continues Saturday, but I think I would feel more positive if it was a road game than a home game.
At least it is homecoming so the crowd should be good.
It will be interesting to see what UNC...
Given that GT was one of the biggest proponents of adding Stan/Cal/SMU in the conference I don't think GT is really thinking of leaving anytime soon, if ever.
I really think we need to see how the money for the sport plays out for the next 5-6 years before we have any expectations for future...
UVA has their starting QB back (as well as their best WR) and have looked better since he returned.
I'm expecting a close game in Charlottesville with both teams in the 20's.
Alot of Clemson fans have been complaining that he hired Riley but is making him run the 'Clemson Offense' rather than getting to run what he would like to run.
I think Dabo may even have mentioned this in one of his press conferences. If that is really true than that is a big waste of money.
The issues at the beginning of the season are largely the same one as now.
On offense we do not run the ball well. Against FBS opponents King is our leading rusher - over 40% of our yards against FBS opponents (and our leader in ypc by alot). We avg only 4.6 ypc (Which is brought up by King's...
What amazes me is that GT had 176 yds total offense and 77 yds passing with less than 40 seconds left in the game and then had 74 yds passing in the final 30 seconds.
Given how little the offense accomplished that game - only 2 drives of more than 4 plays, only 1 drive of over 50 yds, only 2...
Honestly it is too early to know if Key is the answer. I won't even think about that seriously until the end of next season.
FWIW, i'm still hoping for the 6-6 I was hoping for at the beginning of the season and if we get there it is my belief that it will likely include another loss to a team...
I'll also add I will be paying close attention to TO's.
In GT's 2 FBS wins it has 3 TO vs the opponents 10 TO's.
In its 3 FBS losses it has 5 TO's vs 1 for the opponent.
I'm just sort of expecting a close game since that seems to be what BC does.
5 of 6 games for BC decided by 3 points or less and three by the exact same score - 27-24.
Based on his contract I would expect Key to get at least 3 years to show he can turn the program around and have a winning program.
He deserves some time, i'm not going to overreact due to a handful of games. There are pretty obvious improvements and talent upgrades that are needed, i'll watch...
FWIW, I went to the UT website and at least according to their website he was never a DC or co-DC at TN.
In 2018, his lone season at TN, it shows him as the Special Teams Coordinator and Inside LB Coach. Derrick Ansley is listed as DC with Chris Rumph as Co-DC/Outside Linebackers.
I'm thinking...
