    Your First GT QB

I really like threads like this because you hear from some people who rarely post, and also learn from some of the older folks details about the old days expressed with an amazing memory. Thanks to the O.P. and everyone participating in this discussion. It's an interesting and fun read.

    Your First GT QB

The Young Lefthander Kim King was QB in the first Tech game I remember, the '65 Gator Bowl (saw it on TV - a 31-21 W over Texas Tech). But the first one I saw in person was Jim Stevens standing in for Eddie McAshan in the Tech - Ugag game in '72, in Athens. The Jackets lost that one, but...

I didn't know myself, but found it in this old article: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/acc/2015/10/24/georgia-tech-florida-state-fsu-fg-block-touchdown-upset-lance-austin/74570282/ "...the kick had to be low to get some distance on it, and Patrick Gamble managed to get a hand on...

    Conference Realignment

That's a really good question. I guess I would say it's better to be among them, but I really don't know what I'm saying. It begs another question, though - if we were offered a place in these conferences that are destroying college football, should we turn them down?

Only 115 short days until kickoff...

I understand it's the general rule, but it shouldn't be a hard and fast rule. If there were Seminoles in the vicinity, and with the ball at our own 22-yard line, I would agree - don't touch it. But with Austin all alone back there with the football and lots of green ahead of him, the odds...

    Conference Realignment

The ACC can't blink or it's dead. I'll be surprised as well, and I don't think they should care whether FSU and Clemson are happy. They signed the contract, and they can like it or lump it. Their call.

But Austin grabbed the football with no Seminoles anywhere near it. Odds are nobody is going to score, but there's a far greater chance that ball ends up in their end zone than ours, especially considering the fact that they have few if any skilled runners or tacklers on the field.

Only 115 short days until kickoff...

Austin said he hesitated when he heard Paul screaming for him to leave it alone but saw the green field opening up and took off. Coaches in general have a tendency to err on the side of caution. Pop quiz: who blocked the kick?

Only 115 short days until kickoff...

A blocked field goal is a golden opportunity for a long return. The kicking team has a kicker, a holder, a long snapper, and mostly blockers to stop you. Maybe a couple of tight ends. Few skilled tacklers out there, and it's a broken field. The percentage play is to scoop it up and run like hell.

2024 Schedule Difficulty - Projections per CFN

But some perspective: Between 1902 and 1973, 41 consecutive games against Clemson were played in Atlanta. Maybe it's the least Tech could do to give them two straight at Clemson.

    Conference Realignment

Or Illinois, rather than Florida State (since we're picking cherries). Yeah, the matchups were generally bigger, as were the distances. And I remember a lot of folks adverse to the idea because of them. I didn't say the B1G wasn't the better choice, or that such couldn't be seen at the time by...

    Conference Realignment

Indeed. The picture then didn't have the sharp focus it has now, and the question wasn't the no brainer it is today. Regionality carried far more importance than it does currently.
